Description

Damaged Anvil is the third and final wear stage of an anvil in Minecraft, sitting one degrading use away from breaking entirely. Damaged Anvil forms when a normal Anvil and then a Chipped Anvil wear down through repeated use — every renaming, tool repair, or enchantment combine carries a 12% chance to degrade the anvil by one stage. Damaged Anvil cannot be crafted: only the normal Anvil is craftable from 3 Blocks of Iron and 4 Iron Ingots, so Damaged Anvil is obtained solely by wearing one down, from the Creative inventory, or with the command /give @s minecraft:damaged_anvil. The heavy cracks across Damaged Anvil are purely cosmetic and exist in both Java Edition and Bedrock Edition.

Damaged Anvil stays fully functional and renames items, repairs tools and armor, and combines enchantments with no penalty compared to a fresh Anvil. Mining Damaged Anvil with any pickaxe drops the block while keeping its cracked texture, so Damaged Anvil can be picked up and repositioned. Like every anvil, Damaged Anvil is gravity-affected and falls when unsupported, which makes Damaged Anvil usable in falling-anvil traps that crush mobs or players below. Builders who want a battle-worn smithy aesthetic often keep a Damaged Anvil on display, but remember that the next degrading use will destroy Damaged Anvil with a crack animation and breaking sound.

How to get a Damaged Anvil in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Craft a normal Anvil

Damaged Anvil is not craftable, so start with a normal Anvil made from 3 Blocks of Iron and 4 Iron Ingots on the crafting grid.

  2. 2

    Use the Anvil repeatedly

Rename items, repair tools and armor, or combine enchantments at the Anvil. Each use carries a 12% chance to degrade the anvil by one wear stage.

  3. 3

    Pass through Chipped Anvil

After enough uses the Anvil becomes a Chipped Anvil (second stage), then a Damaged Anvil (third and final stage) with heavy cracks.

  4. 4

    Mine the Damaged Anvil

Break the Damaged Anvil with any pickaxe to collect it; it drops itself and keeps the damaged texture so it can be repositioned.

Tip

Shortcuts: take a Damaged Anvil directly from the Creative inventory, or run /give @s minecraft:damaged_anvil in a command-enabled world.

Frequently asked questions

Can you craft a Damaged Anvil?

No. Damaged Anvil is not craftable; only the normal Anvil is crafted from 3 Blocks of Iron and 4 Iron Ingots. Damaged Anvil is obtained by wearing an Anvil down, from the Creative inventory, or with /give @s minecraft:damaged_anvil.

Is a Damaged Anvil still functional?

Yes. Damaged Anvil renames items, repairs tools and armor, and combines enchantments exactly like a fresh Anvil, with no penalty. The heavy cracks on Damaged Anvil are cosmetic only.

What is the difference between a Damaged Anvil and a Chipped Anvil?

Chipped Anvil is the second wear stage with light cracks, while Damaged Anvil is the third and final stage with heavy cracks. Damaged Anvil is one degrading use away from breaking entirely.

Does a Damaged Anvil break?

Yes. The next degrading use after Damaged Anvil destroys the block entirely with a crack animation and breaking sound. Each anvil use has a 12% chance to trigger that final degrade.

Is the Damaged Anvil in both Java and Bedrock Edition?

Yes. Damaged Anvil exists in both Java Edition and Bedrock Edition, and in both it is gravity-affected and can be used in falling-anvil traps.
