Description

Chipped Anvil is the second wear stage of the Anvil in Minecraft, sitting between a brand-new Anvil and a Damaged Anvil in the wear chain Anvil → Chipped Anvil → Damaged Anvil → destroyed. Chipped Anvil cannot be crafted directly: only the normal Anvil is crafted from 3 Blocks of Iron plus 4 Iron Ingots, and Chipped Anvil appears only after a fresh Anvil degrades. Every Anvil action — renaming an item, repairing a tool, or combining enchantments — carries a 12% chance to wear the Anvil down one stage, turning a normal Anvil into a Chipped Anvil. The light cracks across the Chipped Anvil texture are purely cosmetic and clearly distinguish it from the heavier damage of a Damaged Anvil.

Chipped Anvil stays fully functional, performing the exact same renaming, repairing, and enchantment-combining work as a new Anvil with no penalty. Chipped Anvil is mined with any pickaxe and drops itself, keeping its cracked texture so players can pick it up and reposition it. Like every Anvil, Chipped Anvil is gravity-affected and falls when unsupported, which makes it a reliable component in falling-anvil traps that crush mobs or players below. Chipped Anvil exists in both Minecraft Java Edition and Bedrock Edition, so an enchanting setup behaves identically across platforms once an Anvil reaches this stage.

How to get a Chipped Anvil in Minecraft

  1. 1

Craft or place a normal Anvil

Chipped Anvil cannot be crafted, so start with a normal Anvil made from 3 Blocks of Iron and 4 Iron Ingots, then place it down.

  2. 2

    Use the Anvil repeatedly

Rename items, repair tools and gear, or combine enchantments on the Anvil — each use has a 12% chance to wear the Anvil down one stage.

  3. 3

Wait for the first wear stage

Once a use triggers the 12% chance, the new Anvil becomes a Chipped Anvil, showing light cosmetic cracks across its surface.

  4. 4

Mine the Chipped Anvil to keep it

Break the Chipped Anvil with any pickaxe; it drops itself with the chipped texture intact, so you can pick it up and reposition it.

Frequently asked questions

Can you craft a Chipped Anvil in Minecraft?

No. Only the normal Anvil is craftable, from 3 Blocks of Iron and 4 Iron Ingots. A Chipped Anvil is obtained only by wearing down a normal Anvil, through the Creative inventory, or with /give @s minecraft:chipped_anvil.

Is a Chipped Anvil still fully functional?

Yes. A Chipped Anvil renames items, repairs tools and gear, and combines enchantments exactly like a new Anvil, with no penalty. The cracks are purely cosmetic.

How does an Anvil become a Chipped Anvil?

Each Anvil use — renaming, repairing, or combining enchantments — has a 12% chance to wear the Anvil down one stage, turning a new Anvil into a Chipped Anvil.

What is the difference between a Chipped Anvil and a Damaged Anvil?

Chipped Anvil is the second wear stage with light cracks, while Damaged Anvil is the third and final stage with heavier damage that is one use away from breaking.

Does the Chipped Anvil exist in both Java and Bedrock Edition?

Yes. The Chipped Anvil exists in both Minecraft Java Edition and Bedrock Edition and behaves the same way on both platforms.
