Copper Bulb — Minecraft block

Copper Bulb

Oxidizing copper light source from Trial Chambers that dims as it oxidizes, toggled on and off by a redstone pulse rather than a continuous signal.

Description

Copper bulbs are found naturally in trial chambers and can be crafted from three copper blocks, one blaze rod, and one lightning rod arranged in a specific pattern. They function as a light source with an unusual toggle mechanic: a redstone pulse switches them between lit and unlit states rather than keeping them powered only while the signal is present, so a single click from a button or comparator changes state permanently.

Light level depends on oxidation stage. A fresh or waxed copper bulb emits level 15; exposed emits level 12; weathered emits level 8; oxidized emits level 4. Because oxidation in open air gradually reduces brightness over time, builders often apply wax with a honeycomb to lock the bulb at the desired brightness stage.

Copper bulbs are the only light source whose brightness declines without player intervention, making them both a functional lamp and a natural long-term timer. When powered by redstone they emit one level lower than their oxidation state and appear slightly dimmer, useful as a visual indicator of circuit state in compact builds.

Guide

How to use a Copper Bulb in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Craft the Copper Bulb

To craft a Copper Bulb, place a Lightning Rod in the top-center slot, a Blaze Rod in the center slot, and Copper Blocks in the left, right, and bottom-center slots. One crafting session yields 4 Copper Bulbs.

  2. 2

    Place the Copper Bulb

Place the Copper Bulb on any solid surface. A freshly placed, unoxidized Copper Bulb emits light level 15 once toggled on — one of the brightest light sources in the game.

  3. 3

    Toggle with a redstone pulse

A Copper Bulb is toggled by a redstone PULSE rather than a continuous signal. Connect a button, lever set to brief contact, or a comparator output to the Copper Bulb to switch it on or off. The state persists even after the signal ends.

  4. 4

    Apply wax to lock brightness

Right-click the Copper Bulb with Honeycomb to wax it and prevent oxidation. A waxed Copper Bulb keeps its current brightness permanently — critical when you need stable light level 15 from an unoxidized bulb.

  5. 5

    Use as a redstone indicator

When the Copper Bulb receives active redstone power, its light level drops by 1 and its texture changes slightly. This makes the Copper Bulb a built-in circuit indicator: you can tell at a glance whether a line is live without placing additional comparators.

Note

Copper Bulbs found naturally in Trial Chambers may already be partially oxidized, meaning they emit less than light level 15. Mine them with any pickaxe to collect and rewax them at their current oxidation stage.

Frequently asked questions

How do you craft a Copper Bulb?

To craft a Copper Bulb, arrange the ingredients in a crafting table as follows: Lightning Rod in the top-center slot, Blaze Rod in the center slot, and Copper Blocks in the left-center, right-center, and bottom-center slots. This recipe yields 4 Copper Bulbs.

What light level does a Copper Bulb emit?

A Copper Bulb's light level depends on its oxidation stage. An unoxidized Copper Bulb emits light level 15 when lit. Exposed copper drops to 12, Weathered to 8, and Oxidized to 4. When the Copper Bulb is actively powered by redstone, the light level decreases by 1 at each stage.

How do you toggle a Copper Bulb with redstone?

A Copper Bulb toggles on a redstone PULSE, not a sustained signal. Connect a button, a pressure plate, or any brief redstone pulse source to the Copper Bulb. Each pulse flips the Copper Bulb between on and off, and it holds that state until the next pulse arrives.

Does oxidation change Copper Bulb brightness?

Yes. As a Copper Bulb oxidizes over time, its maximum brightness decreases: unoxidized gives light level 15, exposed gives 12, weathered gives 8, and fully oxidized gives only 4. Apply Honeycomb to the Copper Bulb to wax it and stop oxidation at any stage.

How do you stop a Copper Bulb from oxidizing?

Right-click a Copper Bulb with a Honeycomb to apply wax. A waxed Copper Bulb will not oxidize further, preserving its current light output permanently. You can also scrape wax off with an Axe if you want oxidation to resume.

What tool is needed to mine a Copper Bulb?

A Copper Bulb requires any tier of pickaxe to be mined and dropped as an item. Mining a Copper Bulb without a pickaxe destroys it without a drop. The Copper Bulb has a hardness of 3 and blast resistance of 6.
