Description

Blaze Rods drop from blazes — flying nether mobs that spawn from blaze spawners inside nether fortresses. Each blaze drops zero to one rod (a 50% chance), with Looting III raising the maximum to four per kill. Blazes are hostile at range and shoot fire charges, requiring fire resistance potions for safe farming.

Crafting one blaze rod above three cobblestone or blackstone yields a brewing stand, which is required to brew all potions in the game. Crafting one rod produces two blaze powder, and blaze powder is the only fuel that powers a brewing stand — a single powder provides 20 brewing operations.

Blaze powder has three main uses: brewing strength potions, crafting fire charges for flint-and-steel alternatives and dispenser-ignition, and most importantly combining with an ender pearl to create an eye of ender — the navigational item required to locate and activate the End portal in a stronghold. This makes blaze rods the gatekeeping resource for reaching the End dimension and fighting the Ender Dragon.

How to get and use a blaze rod in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Find a nether fortress

Travel through the Nether and locate a nether fortress. Blazes only spawn here — from blaze spawners and along the fortress walkways.

  2. 2

    Defeat blazes safely

Drink a potion of fire resistance, then attack blazes with a bow or sword. Each blaze drops 0–1 blaze rod, up to 0–4 with a Looting III weapon.

  3. 3

    Craft a brewing stand

Place 1 blaze rod above 3 cobblestone or blackstone in the crafting grid to make a brewing stand, required for all potion brewing.

  4. 4

    Make blaze powder

Put a single blaze rod in the grid to get 2 blaze powder — the brewing-stand fuel and the ingredient for eyes of ender and fire charges.

Important

Blaze rods cannot be used as furnace fuel, and blazes never spawn outside the Nether, so build a blaze farm around a fortress spawner for a steady supply.

Frequently asked questions

Where do you get blaze rods?

Blaze rods drop only from blazes, which spawn in nether fortresses from blaze spawners. There is no crafting recipe for them.

How many blaze rods does a blaze drop?

A blaze drops 0–1 blaze rod normally. Looting raises the maximum by one per level, up to 0–4 with Looting III.

What is the difference between a blaze rod and blaze powder?

Crafting one blaze rod produces 2 blaze powder. The powder is the brewing-stand fuel and a potion ingredient, while the rod is used to build the brewing stand itself.

How do you make a brewing stand?

Place one blaze rod above three cobblestone or blackstone in the crafting grid.

Can you get blaze rods without going to the Nether?

No. Blazes spawn only in nether fortresses, so a trip to the Nether is required.

Are blaze rods needed to reach the End?

Yes, indirectly. Blaze powder combined with ender pearls makes eyes of ender, which locate and activate the End portal.
