End Rod
End Rod is a thin glowing pillar emitting light level 14 with white ascending particles — a cleaner alternative to torches.
Description
The light emission is fourteen, one less than glowstone but enough to suppress all hostile mob spawning in a roughly seven-block radius. Most builders prefer end rods over torches in finished interiors because the slim profile reads as architectural lighting rather than caveman fire — perfect for libraries, throne rooms, magical workshops, and modern minimalist builds. The block also generates naturally in end cities, often as accent lighting along corridor edges. Unlike torches, end rods are not extinguished by water and can be placed on any block face without restriction.

How to craft and use an End Rod in Minecraft
-
1
Collect a blaze rod
Defeat blazes that spawn at nether fortress spawners to gather blaze rods; each End Rod craft needs one blaze rod.
-
2
Make a popped chorus fruit
Harvest chorus fruit from chorus plants on the outer End islands, then smelt it in a furnace into popped chorus fruit.
-
3
Craft four End Rods
Place the blaze rod directly above the popped chorus fruit in the crafting grid to produce four End Rods at once.
-
4
Place and orient the End Rod
Aim at a floor, wall, or ceiling; the End Rod rotates to point away from that surface, giving upright, sideways, or downward lighting.
End Rod emits light level 14 and is never extinguished by water, so it lights underwater builds and rain-exposed paths where torches fail.

Frequently asked questions
How do you craft an End Rod?
Stack one blaze rod above one popped chorus fruit in the crafting grid. Each craft yields four End Rods.
How much light does an End Rod emit?
End Rod emits light level 14, one step below glowstone, which is enough to block hostile mob spawns in a roughly seven-block radius.
Can End Rods be placed underwater?
Yes. End Rod is not extinguished by water and keeps glowing underwater, unlike torches that break on contact.
Where do End Rods generate naturally?
End Rods generate in end cities, frequently as accent lighting along corridors, ledges, and tower edges.
Can an End Rod point sideways or downward?
Yes. End Rod rotates based on the surface it is placed on, so it can point up, down, or horizontally out of a wall.
