Compass
Compass points to world spawn and crafts maps, using iron ingots around redstone dust.
Description
In the Nether and End, the normal item spins unpredictably because those dimensions lack the same spawn reference. It also serves as a crafting ingredient for maps and recovery compass variants, and can be linked to a lodestone for custom navigation. Even when coordinates are available, a simple pointer remains useful for players who prefer visual direction over numbers.

How to use a Compass in Minecraft
-
1
Craft the compass
Place four iron ingots in a plus shape around one redstone dust in the center of a 3x3 crafting grid to make one compass.
-
2
Read the needle
Hold the compass in your hand or off-hand; in the Overworld its red needle points toward the world spawn point and swings as you turn.
-
3
Navigate to or from spawn
Follow the needle to walk back to spawn, or keep it behind you to explore outward and still know the way home.
-
4
Bind it to a lodestone
Use the compass on a placed lodestone to create a lodestone compass that points to that exact block in any dimension.
A plain compass spins randomly in the Nether and the End because those dimensions have no spawn reference; only a lodestone compass points reliably there.

Frequently asked questions
How do you craft a compass?
Place four iron ingots in a plus shape around one redstone dust in the center of the crafting grid. This makes one compass in both Java and Bedrock Edition.
Where does a compass point in Minecraft?
In the Overworld a compass points to the world spawn point, not to your bed. Sleeping in a bed does not change the direction it shows.
Why does my compass spin in the Nether?
The Nether and End have no spawn reference, so a normal compass spins randomly. Bind it to a lodestone to make it point reliably in those dimensions.
What can you craft with a compass?
A compass is used to craft maps, and combining one compass with eight echo shards makes a recovery compass that points to your last death location.
Can a compass point to your base?
Yes. Place a lodestone at your base and use the compass on it; the resulting lodestone compass tracks that exact spot in any dimension.
