Guide
How to make a Lodestone Compass in Minecraft
-
1
Obtain a Compass
A Compass is crafted from four Iron Ingots plus one Redstone Dust, or bought from a Librarian villager, giving the base item needed for a Lodestone Compass.
-
2
Get a Lodestone block
A Lodestone is crafted from eight Chiseled Stone Bricks plus one Netherite Ingot, which means at least one Ancient Debris must be mined in the Nether.
-
3
Place the Lodestone
Place the Lodestone block at the exact horizontal location a Lodestone Compass should point toward, such as a base entrance or a deep diamond mine.
-
4
Right-click with the Compass
Hold the Compass and right-click on the placed Lodestone block; the Compass transforms instantly into a Lodestone Compass bound to that target.
-
5
Verify the binding
A successful binding grants the "Country Lode, Take Me Home" advancement, and the Lodestone Compass needle now points to the chosen Lodestone instead of world spawn.
A Lodestone Compass is never made on a crafting grid; only the right-click interaction on a Lodestone block creates or re-binds the item.

Frequently asked questions
Can you craft a Lodestone Compass on a crafting table?
A Lodestone Compass cannot be crafted on a crafting table. The item is created only by using (right-clicking) a regular Compass on a placed Lodestone block in Minecraft Java Edition and Bedrock Edition.
What does a Lodestone Compass point to?
A Lodestone Compass points toward the horizontal position of the specific Lodestone block it was bound to, instead of the world spawn point a normal Compass tracks.
Which version of Minecraft added the Lodestone Compass?
The Lodestone Compass was added in Java Edition 1.16 (snapshot 20w13a) and Bedrock Edition 1.16.0 (beta 1.16.0.57), as part of the Nether Update.
What happens when the target Lodestone is broken?
When the bound Lodestone is broken, the Lodestone Compass needle spins randomly. The item stays a Lodestone Compass and can be re-bound by using it on any Lodestone again; it does not reconnect automatically if the original block is replaced.
How is a Lodestone Compass different from a regular Compass?
A regular Compass always points to the world spawn and has no enchantment glint, while a Lodestone Compass always carries an enchantment glint and points to its bound Lodestone. A Lodestone Compass also does not stack with regular Compasses, only with Lodestone Compasses bound to the same target.
Does a Lodestone Compass work in other dimensions?
If a Lodestone Compass is taken into a different dimension from its target Lodestone, the needle spins randomly, because the magnetic link does not cross dimensions and only works while both the item and the Lodestone are in the same dimension.
