Description

Recovery Compass is crafted from a regular compass surrounded by eight echo shards, resources found in ancient city loot. Instead of pointing to world spawn, it tracks the last death location of the player holding it. If the player has not died, or is in a different dimension than the death point, the needle spins without a stable target.

The item is designed for dangerous expeditions where losing equipment is the real punishment. It helps recover gear after cave accidents, ancient city failures, End falls, or Nether mistakes, provided the player can return before despawn timers matter. Because echo shards are rare, many players keep one at base rather than carrying it into risky fights.

Java & Bedrock Guide

How to craft and use a Recovery Compass in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Collect echo shards

Loot the chests inside an Ancient City in the Deep Dark to gather eight echo shards, the only source of this material.

  2. 2

    Craft the compass

Place one regular compass in the center of the 3x3 crafting grid and surround it with the eight echo shards.

  3. 3

    Keep it in your inventory

Carry the recovery compass before a risky trip; after you die, its needle locks onto your most recent death location.

  4. 4

    Follow the needle

Travel toward the pointer to reach your dropped items before the 5-minute despawn timer removes them.

Important

If you have not died yet, or you are in a different dimension than your death point, the needle spins freely and shows no direction.

Frequently asked questions

How do you craft a Recovery Compass?

Place one compass in the center of the 3x3 grid and surround it with eight echo shards. The shards come only from Ancient City loot chests.

What does a Recovery Compass point to?

It points to the last location where the holding player died, instead of pointing to world spawn like a normal compass.

Does the Recovery Compass work in the Nether and the End?

It only shows a direction while you are in the same dimension as your death point; in another dimension the needle spins with no target.

When was the Recovery Compass added?

It was added in Minecraft 1.19, the Wild Update, alongside the Deep Dark and Ancient Cities.

Is the Recovery Compass renewable?

No. Echo shards only generate in Ancient City chests, so the number you can craft is limited by exploration.
