Description

Sculk Catalyst is a large block crowned with four bony horns, generating naturally throughout the deep dark biome and inside ancient cities. Its function is mechanical rather than decorative: when any mob dies within an eight-block radius, the catalyst absorbs the experience the kill would have produced and instead converts surrounding stone, dirt, and similar terrain into sculk family blocks — sculk, sculk veins, sensors, and shriekers, with proportions roughly tied to the dying mob's XP value.

This means the deep dark biome is not strictly static: bring hostile mobs into a catalyst's range, eliminate them, and the surrounding terrain slowly transforms over the course of seconds. Players exploit this for two purposes — building automatic XP farms (pipe mobs to a kill chamber rigged with catalysts) and creating themed environments by deliberately re-shaping non-deep-dark areas into sculk-covered surfaces. Mining the catalyst itself requires silk touch; without it, the block drops nothing useful, just a small amount of experience.

Minecraft Guide

How to use a Sculk Catalyst in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Mine it with Silk Touch

Find a Sculk Catalyst in the deep dark biome or an ancient city and break it with a Silk Touch tool (a hoe is fastest). Without Silk Touch it drops no block, only about 5 experience.

  2. 2

    Place it on solid ground

Set the catalyst down where you want sculk to grow. It activates any nearby mob death within an 8-block radius, in every direction.

  3. 3

    Trigger a mob death nearby

Kill a hostile mob within 8 blocks of the catalyst. It absorbs the XP the kill would drop and sends a sculk charge that converts surrounding stone, dirt, and grass into sculk.

  4. 4

    Harvest the spread sculk

Mine the new sculk, sculk veins, sensors, and shriekers. Plain sculk drops 1 experience each when broken without Silk Touch, turning the catalyst into the core of an XP farm.

Important

The catalyst only spreads sculk onto convertible blocks (stone, dirt, deepslate, grass, etc.) and never onto bedrock or air. The amount of sculk created scales with the dying mob's XP value.

Frequently asked questions

Can you craft a Sculk Catalyst?

No. The Sculk Catalyst is not craftable. You can only obtain the block by mining it with Silk Touch in the deep dark biome or an ancient city.

What does a Sculk Catalyst do?

When a mob dies within 8 blocks of it, the catalyst absorbs the experience and spreads sculk, sculk veins, sensors, and shriekers across nearby surfaces.

How do you mine a Sculk Catalyst?

Break it with a hoe enchanted with Silk Touch to collect the block. Without Silk Touch it drops no item, only about 5 experience.

What version added the Sculk Catalyst?

It was added in Minecraft 1.19, The Wild Update, released in June 2022, in both Java and Bedrock Edition.

Can you build an XP farm with a Sculk Catalyst?

Yes. Pipe mobs into a kill chamber near the catalyst; the spreading sculk can then be mined for experience, since plain sculk drops 1 XP per block.
