Andesite
Andesite is a neutral grey igneous rock with subtle dark flecks — the most versatile stone alternative for Overworld builds.
Description
A wooden pickaxe is the minimum required tool, and the block always drops itself without Silk Touch. Andesite crafts into polished andesite at a one-to-one rate (four blocks → four polished blocks), and the polished version then becomes slabs, stairs, and walls at a stonecutter. Modern build trends often use it as a brushed-concrete substitute: pair it with iron blocks for industrial pipework, with bone block for crisp panel lines, or with stripped spruce for warm cabin contrasts. The polished surface reads as smooth concrete from a distance.
Guide
How to craft Andesite in Minecraft
-
1
Gather Diorite and Cobblestone
Mine at least 1 Diorite and 1 Cobblestone. Diorite generates naturally underground and in mountain biomes, while Cobblestone is obtained by mining Stone with any pickaxe.
-
2
Open the crafting table
Right-click a Crafting Table to open the 3×3 crafting grid. A crafting table is required — the 2×2 inventory grid is too small for this recipe.
-
3
Place ingredients diagonally
Place 1 Diorite and 1 Cobblestone in any two diagonally adjacent cells of the crafting grid. The recipe yields 2 Andesite blocks per craft.
-
4
Craft Polished Andesite (optional)
Arrange 4 Andesite blocks in a 2×2 square in the crafting grid to produce 4 Polished Andesite — a smoother decorative variant with a cleaner texture.
Andesite can also be found in large veins underground and in mountain biomes, making it one of the easiest stone variants to farm in bulk without crafting.

Frequently asked questions
How do you craft Andesite in Minecraft?
Place 1 Diorite and 1 Cobblestone in any two diagonally adjacent slots of a 3×3 crafting grid. This recipe yields 2 Andesite blocks per craft.
Where does Andesite naturally generate?
Andesite generates naturally in large underground veins and in mountain biomes across the Overworld. Andesite commonly appears between Y=0 and Y=60.
What tool do you need to mine Andesite?
Andesite requires any pickaxe to drop as a collectible block. Mining Andesite without a pickaxe destroys the block and drops nothing.
What is Polished Andesite and how do you make it?
Polished Andesite is a smoother decorative variant of Andesite with a refined texture. Craft it by placing 4 Andesite blocks in a 2×2 square in a crafting table, yielding 4 Polished Andesite.
Can Andesite be used as a building material?
Yes. Andesite is a non-flammable solid block with blast resistance of 6, making Andesite suitable for decorative and structural builds. Andesite works well in modern, grey-toned, or natural stone builds.
What version of Minecraft added Andesite?
Andesite was added in Minecraft Java Edition 1.8 (the Bountiful Update, released September 2014). Andesite is available in both Java Edition and Bedrock Edition.
