How to Make Andesite Slab in Minecraft

Andesite Slab — Minecraft block

Andesite Slab

Andesite Slab is a half-height building block crafted from andesite, giving floors, paths, and roofs smooth half-step rises instead of full-block jumps.

Description

Andesite Slab is the half-block form of andesite, a stone that generates in blobs of up to 864 blocks in every Overworld biome between elevations 0 and 128. Andesite Slab never appears in the world naturally: three andesite placed in one crafting row produce six slabs, and a stonecutter turns a single andesite block into two slabs. A wooden pickaxe clears an Andesite Slab in 1.15 seconds, bare hands need 7.5 seconds and drop nothing, and finished slabs stack to 64 per inventory slot.

Andesite Slab occupies only the bottom or the top half of a block space, and two matching halves placed in one space merge into a double slab that occupies the whole space. Andesite Slab has a hardness of 1.5 and a blast resistance of 6 (how well the block withstands creeper and TNT explosions). Andesite Slab is waterloggable (water and the slab share one block space), so builders place the slab directly into a water source without destroying the water. A stonecutter cuts the same andesite into stairs, walls, and polished variants, so one batch of mined andesite covers every shape of a single design.

Guide

How to craft and place Andesite Slabs in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Mine andesite

Dig to elevations 0–128 in any Overworld biome and break andesite blobs with any pickaxe; a single blob can contain up to 864 blocks.

  2. 2

    Craft six slabs at once

Place three andesite blocks in one horizontal row of the crafting grid to produce six Andesite Slabs.

  3. 3

    Cut slabs at a stonecutter

Put andesite into a stonecutter and collect two Andesite Slabs per block — the same rate as the crafting recipe.

  4. 4

    Place bottom and top halves

Click a floor to lay a bottom slab, or click the underside of a block for a top slab; two matching halves in one space become a double slab.

  5. 5

    Break slabs with any pickaxe

Remove Andesite Slab with any pickaxe — a wooden pickaxe finishes in 1.15 seconds — because bare hands take 7.5 seconds and leave no drop.

Waterlogging

Andesite Slab can hold water in the same block space, so place the slab straight into an existing water source when building canals and docks.

Frequently asked questions

How many slabs does one andesite block give?

Three andesite in one crafting row produce six Andesite Slabs. A stonecutter keeps the same rate, giving two slabs per andesite block.

Can lava or fire destroy an andesite slab?

No. Andesite Slab is not flammable and never catches fire from lava.

Which tool breaks an andesite slab?

Any pickaxe works, and even a wooden pickaxe clears an Andesite Slab in 1.15 seconds. Bare hands need 7.5 seconds and drop nothing.

Does light pass through an andesite slab?

Only partly. A single Andesite Slab blocks light in Java Edition and diffuses sky light in Bedrock Edition, while a double slab stops light completely.

When was the andesite slab added to Minecraft?

Java Edition added Andesite Slab in 1.14, and Bedrock Edition added the slab in 1.9.0.

Is the andesite slab renewable?

Yes. Andesite Slab is renewable (the supply can be replenished endlessly), and andesite itself can be crafted from diorite and cobblestone.
