Description

A Water Bucket is filled by right-clicking a water source with an empty bucket and stacks only to one. Placing it deposits a full water source on the targeted block, after which the container reverts to an empty bucket ready for refilling.

This liquid is essential for hydrating farmland, extinguishing fires, and producing obsidian where flowing water meets a lava source. Players also dump it at their feet to cancel fall damage, and it transports fish, axolotls, and tadpoles. Inside the Nether the contents evaporate instantly with steam particles, leaving the bucket empty.

How to use a Water Bucket in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Fill the bucket

Hold an empty bucket and right-click a water source block; the bucket becomes a Water Bucket and stacks only to one.

  2. 2

    Place the water

Right-click the targeted face of a block to deposit a full water source, after which the Water Bucket reverts to an empty bucket.

  3. 3

    Scoop it back up

Right-click the water source with the empty bucket to refill the Water Bucket and reuse the same liquid elsewhere.

  4. 4

    Make obsidian

Pour the Water Bucket directly onto a lava source block; the contact turns the lava into obsidian you can mine with a diamond or netherite pickaxe.

Nether warning

A Water Bucket cannot place water in the Nether — the contents evaporate instantly with steam particles, leaving an empty bucket.

Frequently asked questions

Can you craft a Water Bucket?

No. A Water Bucket is not crafted — you craft an empty bucket from three iron ingots, then right-click a water source to fill it.

How do you make an infinite water source?

Place water in two opposite corners of a 2x2 hole; the two source blocks fill the center, creating an endless water source you can scoop forever.

Does a Water Bucket work in the Nether?

No. Water evaporates instantly in the Nether, so placing a Water Bucket there only empties the bucket without creating any water.

How do you do an MLG water bucket?

Aim straight down and right-click to place water on the block just before you land; the source cancels fall damage, then scoop it back up.

Can you catch fish with a Water Bucket?

Yes. Right-click cod, salmon, tropical fish, pufferfish, axolotls, or tadpoles with a Water Bucket to capture the mob inside a bucket of that creature.
