Description

Tripwire Hook is a redstone component crafted from one iron ingot, one stick, and one wooden plank, yielding two hooks per recipe in Minecraft Java and Bedrock Edition. Tripwire Hook attaches to the side of a solid block and must be placed as a matching pair facing each other, up to 40 blocks apart. Connecting the two hooks with String stretches an invisible trip line across that gap, and the assembled circuit has existed since the Java Edition 1.3.1 update from 2012.

Tripwire Hook fires a redstone pulse the instant a player, mob, dropped item, or arrow crosses the connected String, which makes Tripwire Hook the core of hidden traps, automatic doors, and intruder alarms. Builders pair Tripwire Hook with TNT for explosive traps or with a note block for silent alerts, and the line can be safely disarmed by cutting the String with shears. Because Tripwire Hook reacts to almost any entity, it is the most reliable trip sensor for corridor defenses and secret-base security.

How to set up a Tripwire Hook trap in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Craft the hooks

Stack one iron ingot, one stick, and one wooden plank in a vertical column on the crafting grid to get two Tripwire Hooks.

  2. 2

    Place two facing hooks

Attach one Tripwire Hook to each of two facing walls, no more than 40 blocks apart, so the hook arrows point toward each other.

  3. 3

    Connect them with string

Lay String along the floor between the two hooks; the hooks snap upright to confirm the trip line is armed.

  4. 4

    Wire the output

Run redstone dust from a hook to TNT, a door, or a note block so the device triggers the moment the line is crossed.

Disarm safely

Cut the String with shears instead of walking through it to disarm a Tripwire Hook line without setting off the connected circuit.

Frequently asked questions

How do you craft a Tripwire Hook?

Place one iron ingot, one stick, and one wooden plank in a vertical line on the crafting table to craft two Tripwire Hooks.

How far apart can Tripwire Hooks be?

Two Tripwire Hooks can be linked by String across a gap of up to 40 blocks; beyond that distance the trip line will not arm.

What triggers a Tripwire Hook?

Any player, mob, dropped item, or arrow that touches the connected String triggers the Tripwire Hook and emits a redstone signal.

How do you disarm a tripwire safely?

Cut the connecting String with shears; this removes the trip line without sending a signal through the Tripwire Hook circuit.

Does the Tripwire Hook work in Java and Bedrock?

Yes, Tripwire Hook works in both Minecraft Java and Bedrock Edition and has been available since the Java Edition 1.3.1 update.
