Description

Trial spawners are found exclusively inside trial chamber structures introduced in Java and Bedrock editions. Unlike normal spawners, they detect all players within a 14-block radius and scale the number of mobs by player count — a solo player faces a total of six mobs while a group of four faces twelve.

Once all active mobs are defeated, the trial spawner ejects loot directly onto the floor for every participating player: a 50% chance of a Trial Key, otherwise bread, cooked chicken, baked potatoes, or regeneration and swiftness potions. The spawner then enters a 30-minute cooldown that keeps ticking even in unloaded chunks. The Trial Key opens a separate Vault block whose richer pool — emeralds, iron equipment, enchanted books — each player can claim once, making group runs more rewarding.

When a player carrying the Bad Omen effect enters a trial chamber, every trial spawner in range converts to its ominous variant: darker particles appear, spawned mobs carry enchanted gear and throw potions, and the associated vault offers rarer rewards. Trial spawners cannot be mined or moved — they drop nothing even with Silk Touch — preserving the challenge structure of every chamber.

How to complete a Trial Spawner in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Find a Trial Chamber

Trial Spawners only appear in Trial Chambers, which generate in the deepslate layer between Y -40 and Y 0; the tuff-and-copper rooms each hold one or more spawners.

  2. 2

    Activate the spawner

Walk within about 14 blocks of the Trial Spawner to switch it on; its top glows and the first wave of mobs starts to spawn.

  3. 3

    Clear every wave

Defeat all active mobs around the Trial Spawner; it tracks the live mob count and only finishes once the arena is empty.

  4. 4

    Collect the rewards

When the trial ends the Trial Spawner ejects rewards onto the floor for every player — bread, cooked chicken, baked potatoes, or potions — plus a 50% chance of a Trial Key.

  5. 5

    Open a nearby Vault

Carry the Trial Key to a Vault block and use it to claim the chamber's main reward, which each player can take once.

Ominous variant

A player carrying the Bad Omen effect converts every Trial Spawner in range to its ominous form, which spawns enchanted, potion-throwing mobs and drops Ominous Trial Keys for the Ominous Vault.

Frequently asked questions

Can you craft or get a Trial Spawner in survival?

No. Trial Spawner generates only inside naturally created Trial Chambers and cannot be crafted; it is obtainable only from the Creative inventory.

Can a Trial Spawner be mined or moved?

No. Trial Spawner drops nothing even with Silk Touch and is immune to pistons, so it stays locked in place inside its chamber.

What version added the Trial Spawner?

Trial Spawner was added in Minecraft 1.21 Tricky Trials for both Java and Bedrock editions.

How does a Trial Spawner scale difficulty?

Trial Spawner counts the players within range and spawns more mobs for each one, so a group of four faces far more enemies than a solo player.

What is an ominous Trial Spawner?

An ominous Trial Spawner appears when a player with Bad Omen enters the chamber; it spawns enchanted, potion-throwing mobs and rewards Ominous Trial Keys.
