Suspicious Sand
Suspicious sand is a brushable archaeology block in desert pyramids, desert wells, and warm ocean ruins that hides one buried pottery sherd, emerald, or diamond.
Description
To recover the buried item, the player equips a Brush and holds right-click on suspicious sand for about a second until the item pops out and the block turns into normal sand. Mining suspicious sand with any other tool breaks it instantly and drops nothing, so a single careless click destroys the loot permanently. Each suspicious sand block holds one item from a structure-specific loot table — pottery sherds, emeralds, diamonds, and TNT in desert pyramids, or a Brush and pottery sherds in desert wells — making suspicious sand the core of Minecraft's archaeology system alongside suspicious gravel.

How to excavate Suspicious Sand in Minecraft
-
1
Find suspicious sand
Explore a desert pyramid, desert well, or warm ocean ruin and look for sand blocks with a cracked, speckled texture that stand out from ordinary sand.
-
2
Craft and equip a Brush
Place one feather, one copper ingot, and one stick in a vertical line on the crafting grid to make a Brush, then hold it in your hand.
-
3
Brush the block slowly
Hold right-click on the suspicious sand for about a second; the buried item gradually emerges and drops once the brushing completes.
-
4
Collect the item before it converts
Pick up the revealed drop; the suspicious sand block immediately becomes regular sand once the item is freed.
Never mine suspicious sand with a pickaxe or shovel — it breaks instantly and the buried item is lost forever. Only a Brush preserves the loot.

Frequently asked questions
Can you craft Suspicious Sand?
No. Suspicious sand cannot be crafted and does not regenerate; it only generates naturally in desert pyramids, desert wells, and warm ocean ruins.
What tool do you need for Suspicious Sand?
You need a Brush. Holding right-click with a Brush slowly excavates the buried item, while any other tool destroys the block and its contents instantly.
What can you get from Suspicious Sand?
Each block holds one item from the structure's loot table, such as pottery sherds, emeralds, diamonds, TNT, or a Brush, depending on whether it is a desert pyramid, desert well, or ocean ruin.
Does Suspicious Sand fall like normal sand?
No. Unlike regular sand, suspicious sand ignores gravity and stays in place, and it cannot be moved by pistons.
What is the difference between Suspicious Sand and Suspicious Gravel?
Suspicious sand spawns in desert pyramids, desert wells, and warm ocean ruins, while suspicious gravel spawns in trail ruins and cold ocean ruins; both are brushed the same way for different loot.
