Powered Rail
Powered Rail accelerates minecarts when lit by redstone and brakes them when unpowered.
Description
When active, the segment pushes moving carts forward and starts stopped carts if they are against a solid block. When inactive, it acts as a brake and can hold a cart at a station. This dual behaviour makes it the core component for minecart launchers, item unloaders, villager routes, and amusement rides. Long railways become much cheaper when powered sections are used only where speed maintenance is actually needed.
Guide
How to build an efficient Powered Rail network in Minecraft
-
1
Craft Powered Rails
Open the crafting table and place 6 gold ingots in the left and right columns, 1 stick in the center of the middle row, and 1 redstone dust in the center of the bottom row. This yields 6 Powered Rails per craft.
-
2
Activate Powered Rails with redstone
Place a redstone torch, lever, button, or any redstone signal source next to or beneath a Powered Rail to activate it. An activated Powered Rail glows orange and accelerates any Minecart passing over it. A Powered Rail without a redstone signal acts as a brake.
-
3
Space Powered Rails correctly on flat track
On flat terrain, place one Powered Rail every 38 regular rails to maintain maximum Minecart speed of 8 blocks per second throughout the route. On uphill slopes, place one Powered Rail every 2 to 4 blocks to prevent the Minecart from stalling.
-
4
Use Powered Rail as a brake
A Powered Rail with no redstone signal (unpowered) stops a Minecart instantly upon contact. Place an unpowered Powered Rail at stations or loading zones to halt the Minecart automatically without any additional mechanism.
-
5
Test the rail network with a Minecart
Place a Minecart on the track at the starting Powered Rail and observe its behavior. If the Minecart slows before reaching the next Powered Rail, add more Powered Rails at shorter intervals. On a correctly spaced flat track, the Minecart will maintain full speed for the entire journey.
A single activated Powered Rail at the start of an uphill slope will launch a stationary Minecart. Add 1 Powered Rail at every 2 to 3 block rise to keep it moving uphill without stalling.

Frequently asked questions
How do you craft Powered Rails in Minecraft?
Craft Powered Rails on a crafting table by placing 6 gold ingots in the left and right columns, 1 stick in the center of the middle row, and 1 redstone dust in the center of the bottom row. Each craft produces 6 Powered Rails.
How far apart should Powered Rails be on flat track?
On flat terrain, place one Powered Rail every 38 regular rails to maintain maximum Minecart speed of 8 blocks per second. Spacing Powered Rails further apart will cause the Minecart to slow down and stop before reaching the next boost.
How do you activate Powered Rails?
Connect a redstone power source — such as a redstone torch placed beside or beneath the Powered Rail, a lever, a button, or a detector rail — to supply a redstone signal. An activated Powered Rail glows orange and accelerates passing Minecarts.
Can a Powered Rail launch a stationary Minecart?
Yes. A single activated Powered Rail placed at the start of a track will launch a stationary Minecart sitting on top of it. The Minecart must be resting directly on the activated Powered Rail for the launch to work.
What is the difference between Powered Rail and regular Rail?
Regular rail has no active effect on Minecart speed — a Minecart simply rolls along it and loses speed to friction on flat ground. Powered Rail, when activated by redstone, accelerates the Minecart up to maximum speed; when not activated, it immediately stops the Minecart.
How do you use Powered Rail as a brake?
Leave the Powered Rail unconnected to any redstone source (no signal). An unpowered Powered Rail stops a Minecart the moment it rolls over the rail. This is the standard technique for creating stations, loading bays, or automatic stops in a rail network.
