Minecart
Minecart is the basic rail vehicle, crafted from five iron ingots for transport and automation.
Description
The vehicle also acts as a crafting ingredient for specialised variants: storage carts, hopper carts, TNT carts, and other transport tools depending on version. Survival builders use it for villager relocation, mine access, item movement, roller coasters, and compact redstone timing. Because it can be broken and picked up quickly, temporary transport lines remain practical even in early bases.
Guide
How to build and use a Minecart rail system in Minecraft
-
1
Craft a Minecart
Open the crafting table and place 5 iron ingots in a U-shape: one in the left-middle, one in the center-middle, one in the right-middle, one in the bottom-left, and one in the bottom-right. This yields 1 Minecart.
-
2
Lay rails on the ground
Craft regular rails from 6 iron ingots and 1 stick (yields 16 rails), then place them on a flat surface or slope. Minecart moves automatically on downhill slopes without any power source.
-
3
Place the Minecart on rails
Hold the Minecart in your hand and right-click on a rail segment. The Minecart will snap onto the rail track immediately.
-
4
Board and ride the Minecart
Right-click the stationary Minecart to enter it. Press the forward movement key to accelerate on flat ground. Minecart reaches a top speed of about 8 blocks per second on flat powered-rail-boosted track.
-
5
Stop and retrieve the Minecart
Press the sneak key to exit the Minecart while moving. To pick up the Minecart, attack (left-click) it — the Minecart will break into an item. A powered rail with no redstone signal also acts as a brake, stopping the Minecart instantly.
Combine Minecart with a chest (Chest Minecart) or a hopper (Hopper Minecart) to automate item transport between storage areas without player input.

Frequently asked questions
How do you craft a Minecart in Minecraft?
Craft a Minecart by placing 5 iron ingots in a U-shape on a crafting table: fill the left, center, and right cells of the middle row, plus the bottom-left and bottom-right cells. This produces 1 Minecart.
How do you ride a Minecart?
Place the Minecart on a rail, then right-click on the Minecart to board it. Press the forward movement key to move on flat ground, or let gravity carry the Minecart down slopes.
How do you stop a Minecart?
Place a powered rail with no redstone signal on the track — it acts as a brake and stops the Minecart immediately. You can also exit the Minecart by pressing the sneak key while riding.
What are the different Minecart variants?
Minecraft includes five Minecart variants: the standard rideable Minecart, Chest Minecart (stores up to 27 item stacks), Hopper Minecart (collects items from the ground or containers), Furnace Minecart (self-propelled, pushes other carts), and TNT Minecart (explodes on impact or when activated by redstone).
How fast does a Minecart travel?
On flat track with no boosts, a Minecart gradually slows due to friction. With a powered rail boost, the Minecart reaches a maximum speed of approximately 8 blocks per second on Java Edition. On downhill slopes the Minecart accelerates without any powered rail.
Can a Minecart carry mobs or animals?
Yes. Push a mob or animal into a stationary Minecart and the entity will ride inside it. The Minecart then moves as normal, carrying the mob along the track. This is useful for transporting villagers or animals over long distances.
