Description

Minecart with TNT is a movable explosive crafted from one block of TNT placed on top of one minecart, and it was added to Java Edition in the 1.5 Redstone Update and to Bedrock Edition in Pocket Edition alpha 0.14.0. Minecart with TNT rolls along rails like an ordinary cart until a powered activator rail starts its four-second fuse. Being destroyed while moving, set on fire, or caught in another explosion detonates it after a random delay of up to 1.95 seconds, while a fall of more than three blocks sets it off instantly. The blast power of Minecart with TNT scales with speed: a stationary cart explodes with roughly the strength of normal TNT (power 4), while a fast-moving cart carves a noticeably larger crater.

Players use Minecart with TNT for rapid tunnel boring, large-scale mining, PvP traps, and demolishing old builds. A line of activator rails can launch a chain of TNT minecarts to clear a long tunnel in a single pass, while detector rails let redstone decide the exact ignition point. Because a stray redstone signal or accidental fire can trigger Minecart with TNT next to storage rooms and farms, survival players should keep the carts unplaced and leave activator rails switched off until a detonation is actually wanted.

How to use a Minecart with TNT in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Craft the TNT minecart

Place one TNT block above one minecart in the crafting grid to make a single Minecart with TNT.

  2. 2

    Lay rails to the target

Run regular rails toward the spot you want destroyed and insert at least one activator rail at the ignition point.

  3. 3

    Power the activator rail

Connect a lever, button, or redstone torch to the activator rail; a Minecart with TNT passing over it lights a four-second fuse.

  4. 4

    Clear the blast zone

Move several blocks away before detonation, because a moving Minecart with TNT explodes larger than static TNT and can chain to nearby carts.

Important

Minecart with TNT detonates instantly only when it falls more than three blocks without landing on a rail; being destroyed while moving, catching fire, or being hit by another explosion just starts a short random fuse of up to 1.95 seconds — never push one toward unprotected builds or storage.

Frequently asked questions

How do you craft a Minecart with TNT?

Place one TNT block directly above one minecart in the crafting grid to craft one Minecart with TNT.

How do you detonate a Minecart with TNT?

Send a Minecart with TNT over a powered activator rail to start a four-second fuse. Destroying it while moving, igniting it, or hitting it with an explosion sets off a short random fuse of up to 1.95 seconds, while a fall of more than three blocks detonates it instantly.

Is a Minecart with TNT stronger than regular TNT?

A stationary Minecart with TNT explodes with about power 4 like normal TNT, but its blast grows larger the faster the cart is moving when it detonates.

Does Minecart with TNT work in Bedrock Edition?

Yes. Minecart with TNT exists in both Java and Bedrock Edition and is armed by activator rails the same way in each.

What is a Minecart with TNT used for?

Minecart with TNT is used for tunnel boring, large-scale mining, demolition, and PvP traps, often as chained carts on activator rails.
