Description

Minecart with Furnace is crafted by placing a furnace inside a crafting table slot with a minecart. Unlike player-ridden carts, it needs no external power from powered rails — fueling it with coal or charcoal, the only fuels it accepts, sets it moving in the direction the player is facing. Once running, it pushes other minecarts ahead of it, making it a simple way to move a chain of carts without complex redstone.

The Minecart with Furnace exists only in Java Edition — Bedrock Edition never received it. The furnace cart is mostly replaced by powered rails in modern builds because powered rails offer more precise speed control and work with hoppers and detector rails. The furnace cart still has niche value for players who want autonomous transport without powered rail infrastructure: early-game mine transport, simple item delivery systems, or builds that value the mechanical aesthetic of a self-propelled cart. It cannot be loaded with items and serves purely as a locomotive. Breaking it drops the Minecart with Furnace itself as a single item — before Java 1.19 it split into a furnace and a minecart.

How to use a Minecart with Furnace in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Craft the furnace minecart

Place one furnace and one minecart anywhere in the crafting grid to make a Minecart with Furnace.

  2. 2

    Lay your rail track

Build a rail line and set the furnace minecart on the rails where you want the locomotive to start.

  3. 3

    Fuel it to move

Right-click the cart with coal or charcoal; it starts moving in the direction you are facing.

  4. 4

    Push connected carts

Place other minecarts ahead on the same track so the furnace cart pushes them along as it travels.

Important

Powered rails give more precise speed control, so most modern builds use them instead. The furnace cart cannot hold items and serves only as a locomotive.

Frequently asked questions

Can you craft a Minecart with Furnace?

Yes. Combine one furnace and one minecart in the crafting grid to make one Minecart with Furnace.

How do you make the furnace minecart move?

Right-click it with coal or charcoal. The fuel propels it along the rails in the direction you were facing.

Can a Minecart with Furnace carry items?

No. It works only as a locomotive that pushes other minecarts and has no inventory of its own.

Is the furnace minecart still useful?

It is mostly replaced by powered rails, but it gives redstone-free autonomous transport for early-game or decorative builds.

What do you get when you break it?

Since Java 1.19, breaking a Minecart with Furnace drops the cart itself as a single item; older versions split it into a furnace and a minecart.
