Rail — Minecraft block

Rail

Rail is the basic minecart track, crafted in batches of sixteen from iron ingots and a stick.

Description

Rail uses six iron ingots and one stick in a tall side-column recipe, producing sixteen track pieces per craft. It can be placed on most solid top faces and automatically bends when neighbouring tracks connect at right angles. On slopes, the line climbs one block at a time, letting minecarts move through mines, warehouses, roller coasters, and villager transport systems without stairs.

The basic version does not provide power. A cart pushed by a player, furnace cart, gravity slope, or powered rail will keep rolling across it until friction slows the movement. Because the recipe gives a large output, this is the cheapest way to cover long distances. Redstone variants handle speed control and detection, but ordinary track still forms the backbone of nearly every minecart network.

Guide

How to build a minecart track with Rail in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Craft Rails in batches

Place six iron ingots in two vertical columns with one stick in the centre of the crafting grid to get 16 Rail pieces per craft. Stock up before building long routes.

  2. 2

Lay the track on solid ground

Right-click each Rail onto a solid block surface. Rails snap automatically when two pieces meet at a right angle to form curves, so no special placement is needed at turns.

  3. 3

    Add Powered Rails for speed

Insert Powered Rail pieces every 32–38 blocks on flat track and power them with a Redstone torch or lever so minecarts maintain speed across the whole line.

  4. 4

    Build slopes where needed

Place Rail pieces one block higher than the previous piece. The track climbs at a one-block-per-block gradient and minecarts can climb short slopes under their own momentum.

  5. 5

    Place a Minecart to test

Drop a Minecart onto the track and give it a push, or use a Powered Rail at the start to launch it. Minecarts travel at up to 8 blocks per second on flat Rail.

Tip

Rail curves only form at 90-degree junctions. T- and cross-junctions toggle direction when a Redstone signal is applied to an adjacent Powered Rail.

Frequently asked questions

How many Rails does one craft recipe give?

One Rail recipe using six iron ingots and one stick gives exactly 16 Rail pieces, making it one of the most output-efficient crafting recipes in Minecraft.

Do Rails need a flat surface?

Rail can be placed on most solid block tops and also on slopes rising one block per horizontal block, allowing minecart lines to climb terrain naturally.

Can minecarts move without Powered Rail?

Yes — a minecart pushed by a player or placed on a downward slope rolls across plain Rail under momentum, though friction will eventually slow it to a stop on flat track.

What is the difference between Rail and Powered Rail?

Rail provides the basic track with no acceleration effect; Powered Rail boosts a minecart's speed or brakes it to a stop when given a Redstone signal.

How fast do minecarts travel on Rail?

Minecarts reach up to 8 blocks per second on flat Rail when given sufficient momentum from a Powered Rail launch or a downward slope.
