Steel is the hardened metal Industrial Craft 2 smelts from iron in the Blast Furnace, the base material for advanced machines and turbines.
Description
Steel goes into the mod's mid-tier components: the Kinetic Steam Generator takes 5 units, the Steam Turbine Blade 10, the Steel Rotor Blade 10, and the Iridium Storage Box 5. The same metal feeds the Steel Block Cutting Blade. For storage, the crafting grid packs 9 units into a Steel Block and unpacks the block back into all 9. One bulk smelting session keeps the generators, rotors, and turbine blades supplied without relighting the Blast Furnace.

Build a Blast Furnace
Place the Blast Furnace next to a heat source such as the Solid Heat Generator or the Electric Heat Generator, with heat entering through the orange port on the machine's side.

Fill six air cells
Load six cells into the Compressor to fill them with air — 6000 mB in total for the smelting process.

Load iron and air
Feed the Blast Furnace iron in ingot, ore, or dust form together with the six air cells; each iron unit becomes one Steel in roughly 300 seconds, and Slag drops out as a by-product.

Collect the output
Take the finished Steel from the output slot, send the Slag to further processing, and pass the returned empty cells to the Compressor for a refill.

Pack Steel into a block
Store surplus Steel as a Steel Block on the crafting grid — 9 Steel per block — and craft the block back apart to recover all 9 Steel.

Frequently asked questions
Can you craft Steel on a plain crafting table?
No. Steel is created only in the Blast Furnace; the crafting table merely packs 9 Steel into a Steel Block for storage and unpacks the block again.
Why does the Macerator return iron dust instead of Steel dust?
Steel has no dust form in Industrial Craft 2. The Macerator grinds one Steel ingot into one iron dust and one dense steel plate into eight iron dusts.
Does a stronger heat source speed up Steel smelting?
No. The Blast Furnace draws 1 hU/t while smelting and accepts up to 20 hU/t, but extra heat never shortens the roughly 300 seconds one Steel takes.
Do the six air cells ever run out?
No. The Blast Furnace returns each emptied cell and the Compressor refills it, so the original six cells cover unlimited Steel production.
