Description

The IC2 Drill is the basic electric mining tool from Industrial Craft 2 Experimental, designed to replace an iron pickaxe with a faster, energy-powered alternative. The Drill mines at the iron tier, meaning the Drill can break stone, cobblestone, iron, gold, redstone, diamond, and emerald ores, but the Drill cannot mine obsidian (a Diamond Drill is required for that). On stone and cobblestone, the IC2 Drill is roughly two to three times faster than an iron pickaxe. The Drill runs on EU (Energy Units) with an internal storage of 30,000 EU and consumes 50 EU per block mined in standard mode. Players charge the Drill in a Batbox, MFE, or MFSU at Low Voltage (32 EU/t). A right-click toggle activates Low Power mode, which halves both consumption (about 25 EU per block) and mining speed, useful when the Drill is nearly empty. The Drill is crafted from one Iron Drill Head on top, one RE Battery in the middle, and one Electronic Circuit on the bottom, with the Iron Drill Head itself made from five Refined Iron in a Y pattern.

Guide

How to use the IC2 Drill in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Craft the Iron Drill Head

Place five Refined Iron in a Y pattern on the crafting grid to produce one Iron Drill Head, the core component of the IC2 Drill.

  2. 2

    Assemble the Drill

Combine one Iron Drill Head on top, one RE Battery in the middle, and one Electronic Circuit on the bottom in a vertical column to craft the IC2 Drill.

  3. 3

    Charge the Drill

Place the Drill into a Batbox, MFE, or MFSU. The Drill accepts Low Voltage (32 EU/t) and stores up to 30,000 EU internally.

  4. 4

    Mine efficiently

Use the Drill on stone and cobblestone for roughly two-to-three-times the speed of an iron pickaxe; each block consumes 50 EU in standard mode.

  5. 5

    Toggle Low Power mode

Right-click the Drill to enable Low Power mode, halving consumption to about 25 EU per block and halving speed — useful when EU is low.

Tip

The IC2 Drill cannot mine obsidian; upgrade the Iron Drill Head to a Diamond Drill Head (five Diamonds in a Y pattern) to unlock the Diamond Drill, which mines obsidian.

Frequently asked questions

How do you craft the IC2 Drill?

Place one Iron Drill Head on top, one RE Battery in the middle, and one Electronic Circuit on the bottom in a vertical column. The Iron Drill Head itself uses five Refined Iron in a Y shape.

Can the IC2 Drill mine obsidian?

No, the IC2 Drill mines at iron tier and cannot break obsidian. Upgrade to the Diamond Drill by swapping the Iron Drill Head for a Diamond Drill Head to mine obsidian.

How much EU does the IC2 Drill consume?

The IC2 Drill consumes 50 EU per block in standard mode and stores up to 30,000 EU internally. Low Power mode roughly halves consumption to about 25 EU per block.

How do you charge the IC2 Drill?

Place the IC2 Drill into a Batbox, MFE, or MFSU. The Drill accepts Low Voltage at 32 EU per tick from any standard IC2 charger.

What does Low Power mode do?

Right-clicking the IC2 Drill toggles Low Power mode, which halves both EU consumption and mining speed, letting the Drill mine more blocks per charge when energy is scarce.

Is the IC2 Drill faster than an iron pickaxe?

Yes, the IC2 Drill mines stone and cobblestone roughly two to three times faster than an iron pickaxe while covering the same block tier.
