Description

Coal in IndustrialCraft 2 is the entry-point fuel and carbon source for the entire IC2 industrial chain. The Coal item feeds the IC2 Generator, where one piece burns to produce Energy Units (EU) used to power machines and charge low-tier batteries. Placed in a Macerator, one Coal yields one Coal Dust, which is the building block of IC2's most famous progression recipe: combine 8 Coal Dust with 1 Flint (shapeless) to craft a Coal Ball. Compressing a Coal Ball produces a Coal Chunk, and compressing a Coal Chunk yields an Industrial Diamond — IC2's renewable, craftable diamond substitute used in advanced machine and tool recipes. Coal also stacks naturally with vanilla recipes such as Torches and standard furnace fuel, so the IC2 mod treats it as a dual-purpose resource: vanilla utility plus industrial input. Players running IC2 Experimental or IC2 Classic on Forge for Minecraft 1.7.10 through 1.12.2 will see ic2:coal in JEI alongside vanilla coal, with identical stack size and burn behavior. The strategic value is the conversion ratio: stockpiling coal early translates directly into Coal Dust banks, Industrial Diamonds for circuits, and steady EU for your first Generator.

Guide

How to use IC2 Coal in IndustrialCraft 2

  1. 1

    Power the IC2 Generator

Place IC2 Coal in the Generator's fuel slot to produce EU and power your starter base.

  2. 2

    Macerate Coal into Coal Dust

Run one Coal through a Macerator (powered by your Generator) to receive one Coal Dust per piece.

  3. 3

    Craft a Coal Ball

Use a shapeless recipe of 8 Coal Dust plus 1 Flint on the crafting grid to produce a single Coal Ball.

  4. 4

    Compress to a Coal Chunk

Place the Coal Ball in a Compressor to convert it into a denser Coal Chunk.

  5. 5

    Compress to an Industrial Diamond

Compress the Coal Chunk a second time to receive an Industrial Diamond for circuits and tools.

Tip

IC2 Coal remains valid vanilla furnace fuel and a Torch ingredient, so excess stock is never wasted.

Frequently asked questions

What is IC2 Coal used for?

IC2 Coal is burned in the IC2 Generator for EU and macerated into Coal Dust, which feeds the Coal Ball and Industrial Diamond chain.

How do I make an Industrial Diamond from coal?

Macerate 8 Coal into 8 Coal Dust, craft a Coal Ball with 1 Flint, then compress the Coal Ball into a Coal Chunk and compress again into an Industrial Diamond.

How much EU does one Coal produce in the IC2 Generator?

One Coal burns in the IC2 Generator for the same total energy as in a vanilla furnace, supplying EU steadily until the fuel is consumed.

Does IC2 Coal still work as vanilla furnace fuel?

Yes. IC2 Coal stacks and burns identically to vanilla coal, so it remains valid for smelting and crafting Torches.

Which Minecraft versions support IC2 Coal?

IC2 Coal ships with IC2 Experimental and IC2 Classic on Forge, covering Minecraft 1.7.10 through 1.12.2.
