Description

End Portal Frame is found exclusively in stronghold portal rooms — pre-built structures generated underground in nearly every world. Twelve frames arranged in a 5×5 ring with the corners removed form the portal foundation, and inserting an Eye of Ender into each empty slot ignites the portal in the centre. Some frames spawn with the eye already in place; the rest must be filled by the player using eyes crafted from blaze powder and ender pearls.

The block is one of three indestructible blocks in vanilla — bedrock, end portal frame, and the portal itself. It cannot be moved by pistons, it shrugs off TNT, ghast fireballs, and any tool. The texture is a pale stone block with a green decorative top resembling a chiseled gemstone setting. Once activated, the centre of the ring shows the iconic black void with starfield, and stepping into it teleports the player directly to the central island of the End dimension.

How to activate the End Portal in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Locate a stronghold

Right-click an Eye of Ender to throw it into the air; the eye floats toward the nearest stronghold. Follow its direction, throwing another every few hundred blocks, until an eye hovers in place and drops straight down — the stronghold is underground below that spot.

  2. 2

Dig down to the portal room

Excavate beneath the point where the last Eye of Ender fell to break into the stronghold, then follow its corridors to the portal room. The room sits above a lava pool and includes a staircase and a silverfish spawner.

  3. 3

Fill the empty End Portal Frames

Each of the twelve End Portal Frames holds one Eye of Ender. Some frames already contain an eye on generation, so right-click an Eye of Ender onto every still-empty frame until all twelve point inward.

  4. 4

    Step through the portal

Inserting the final Eye of Ender ignites the End Portal in the centre of the ring. Walk or fall into the black starfield to teleport to the End dimension and the Ender Dragon boss fight.

Important

End Portal Frames are indestructible in Survival — they cannot be mined, blown up, or pushed by pistons. You can only build a working End Portal at an existing stronghold; the frames can never be carried home and rebuilt elsewhere.

Frequently asked questions

Can you craft an End Portal Frame in Minecraft?

No. End Portal Frame has no crafting recipe and cannot be obtained in Survival. It only generates naturally in stronghold portal rooms; in Creative you can take it with pick-block or the /give command.

How many Eyes of Ender do you need to activate the End Portal?

Up to twelve — one per frame. Each End Portal Frame can generate with an Eye of Ender already inserted, so you often need fewer than twelve to complete the ring.

Can you break or move an End Portal Frame?

No. End Portal Frame is one of the few indestructible blocks alongside bedrock. It resists TNT, ghast fireballs, and every tool, and pistons cannot push it.

Does the End Portal Frame work the same in Java and Bedrock Edition?

Yes. End Portal Frame generates in strongholds and activates with twelve Eyes of Ender in both Java and Bedrock Edition, opening a portal to the central island of the End.

Can you remove an Eye of Ender after placing it?

No. Once an Eye of Ender is set into an End Portal Frame it is permanent in Survival. The only way to reset a frame is in Creative mode or by replacing the block with commands.
