Description

Bedrock is an indestructible block in Minecraft that forms the bottom five layers of the Overworld and the top and bottom layers of the Nether. It cannot be mined, broken, or destroyed by any explosion, including TNT, Withers, or end crystals — even with a Netherite pickaxe. Bedrock exists purely as a world boundary, preventing players from falling out of the world. In Creative mode, bedrock can be obtained and placed by players, but in Survival mode it remains permanent. The block has a distinctive dark, mottled grey texture that has become an iconic visual element of Minecraft worlds.

Java Edition Guide

How to find and use Bedrock in Minecraft

  1. 1

Dig to the bottom of the Overworld

In Minecraft 1.18+ the Overworld extends to Y=−64. Bedrock appears in the bottom five layers from Y=−64 to Y=−60, with the highest density at Y=−64 and a scattered transition near Y=−60.

  2. 2

Locate the Nether floor and ceiling

Enter the Nether through a Nether portal. Bedrock fills the floor at Y=0–4 and the ceiling at Y=123–127. Both boundaries are completely indestructible in Survival with any tool or explosion.

  3. 3

Switch to Creative mode to mine Bedrock

Bedrock has an effective hardness of −1 in Survival, making it immune to all tools, TNT, Withers, and end crystals. In Creative mode, any pickaxe mines Bedrock instantly.

  4. 4

Use Bedrock as a permanent build boundary

Adventure map makers and server admins use Bedrock to create inescapable walls, floors, and ceilings. Bedrock does not burn, is not affected by gravity, and cannot be moved by pistons — ideal for structural anchors in custom maps.

Bedrock Edition difference

In Bedrock Edition (console and mobile), the Nether ceiling is also solid Bedrock at Y=127. Unlike Java Edition, Bedrock Edition prevents players from accessing the Nether roof by teleportation or glitch, enforcing the ceiling as an actual barrier.

Frequently asked questions

Can you mine Bedrock in Survival mode?

No. Bedrock has a hardness of −1 in Survival, making it immune to every pickaxe, TNT blast, Wither explosion, and end crystal detonation. Only Creative mode can remove Bedrock from the world.

At what Y level does Bedrock generate in Minecraft 1.18+?

In Java Edition 1.18 and later, Bedrock generates in the Overworld between Y=−64 and Y=−60 — the absolute bottom five layers. In the Nether, Bedrock forms the floor at Y=0–4 and the ceiling at Y=123–127.

What is Bedrock's blast resistance?

Bedrock is explosion-proof in Minecraft. No vanilla explosion — TNT, charged creeper, Wither skull, or end crystal — can damage Bedrock in Survival mode. Its blast resistance effectively exceeds any possible explosion force.

Can Bedrock be obtained in Survival mode?

No. Bedrock never drops as an item, does not appear in any crafting recipe, loot table, or chest, and cannot be traded with villagers. Bedrock is obtainable only through the Creative inventory.

What is the Nether roof and why is it made of Bedrock?

The Nether ceiling at Y=127 is a flat layer of Bedrock in Java Edition. Through certain glitches, players can reach this layer and walk across the top of the Nether dimension. Many servers restrict this. Bedrock Edition fully blocks access above the ceiling.
