Dried Ghast
Dried Ghast is a placeable Nether block that transforms into the rideable Happy Ghast when hydrated in the Overworld.
Description
The true power of the Dried Ghast lies in its transformation mechanic. When placed in the Overworld and exposed to water — whether from rain, an adjacent water source block, or a water bucket — the Dried Ghast begins a gradual hydration process. After roughly 20 seconds of continuous water exposure, the Dried Ghast completes its transformation into a Happy Ghast, the first rideable flying mob in vanilla Minecraft. Equipping the Happy Ghast with a Harness (crafted from 2 Leather, 2 String, and 1 Glass Pane) allows up to 4 players to ride it simultaneously. The transformation does not occur in the Nether, since water cannot exist there naturally. If the Dried Ghast block is broken mid-transformation, it reverts to its dry state.
Guide
How to transform a Dried Ghast into a Happy Ghast in Minecraft
-
1
Find or craft a Dried Ghast
Dried Ghast blocks generate naturally in Nether soul sand valley and basalt delta biomes, spawning on soul sand and netherrack. Alternatively, craft one in a 3×3 crafting table by placing 1 Bone Block in the center slot and filling all 8 surrounding slots with Ghast Tears.
-
2
Bring the Dried Ghast to the Overworld
Carry the Dried Ghast item from the Nether to the Overworld through a Nether portal. Transformation only happens where water exists naturally — the Overworld or the End — not in the Nether.
-
3
Place the Dried Ghast on a solid block
Choose an open outdoor area in the Overworld. Place the Dried Ghast block on any solid surface with enough vertical clearance for the Happy Ghast to emerge (at least 3 blocks of air above).
-
4
Expose the Dried Ghast to water
Water contact triggers the transformation. Rain alone is sufficient if the Dried Ghast has an open sky. You can also place a water source block adjacent to or above the Dried Ghast, or use a water bucket to pour water directly on it.
-
5
Wait ~20 seconds for the Happy Ghast to appear
After approximately 20 seconds of continuous water exposure, the Dried Ghast completes its transformation into a Happy Ghast — the first rideable flying mob in vanilla Minecraft. To ride it, craft a Harness from 2 Leather, 2 String, and 1 Glass Pane, then equip the Harness onto the Happy Ghast. Up to 4 players can ride simultaneously.
If the Dried Ghast block is broken during transformation, it reverts to its dry item form with no progress saved. The transformation does not occur in the Nether or End locations that lack water.

Frequently asked questions
Where do you find a Dried Ghast in Minecraft?
Dried Ghast blocks generate naturally in the Nether, specifically in soul sand valley and basalt delta biomes, where they spawn on soul sand and netherrack. Dried Ghast was added in Java Edition 1.21.5 and Bedrock Edition 1.21.50.
How do you craft a Dried Ghast?
To craft a Dried Ghast, place 1 Bone Block in the center slot of a 3×3 crafting table and fill all 8 surrounding slots with Ghast Tears. This yields 1 Dried Ghast block.
How do you turn a Dried Ghast into a Happy Ghast?
Place the Dried Ghast block in the Overworld and expose it to water — rain, an adjacent water source block, or a water bucket all work. After approximately 20 seconds of continuous water contact, the Dried Ghast transforms into a Happy Ghast mob.
Can you ride a Happy Ghast?
Yes. Craft a Harness using 2 Leather, 2 String, and 1 Glass Pane, then equip the Harness onto the Happy Ghast. Once equipped, up to 4 players can ride the Happy Ghast simultaneously, making it the first rideable flying mob in vanilla Minecraft.
Does the Dried Ghast transformation work in the Nether?
No. Water cannot exist naturally in the Nether, so the Dried Ghast does not transform there. Bring the Dried Ghast to the Overworld before attempting to hydrate it.
What happens if you break a Dried Ghast during transformation?
Breaking a Dried Ghast block mid-transformation cancels the process and drops the Dried Ghast as an item with no progress saved. You can then place it again and restart the hydration process.
