Description

Dark Oak Slab is a half-height building block crafted from Dark Oak Planks, introduced in Java Edition 1.7.2. Three Dark Oak Planks arranged in a horizontal row yield six Dark Oak Slabs. Dark Oak Slab has a hardness of 2.0 and a blast resistance of 3.0. An axe is the fastest tool for breaking Dark Oak Slab, though any tool or bare hands will work. Dark Oak Slab always drops itself, so Silk Touch is not required. Dark Oak Slab is waterloggable in both Java and Bedrock editions. Placing two Dark Oak Slabs in the same block space creates a full double-slab block. Dark Oak Slab is flammable with a flammability value of 5 and fire spread of 20, so open-flame proximity is a fire hazard. Dark Oak Slab also serves as a furnace fuel, smelting 0.75 items per slab. At half height, Dark Oak Slab lets players step up without jumping, making it ideal for gradual staircases, decorative floors, and rooftop detailing.

Guide

How to craft and use Dark Oak Slab in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Open a Crafting Table

Open a Crafting Table (3×3 grid) — Dark Oak Slab cannot be made in the 2×2 inventory grid.

  2. 2

Place 3 planks in a row

Place 3 Dark Oak Planks side by side in any single horizontal row of the crafting grid to receive 6 Dark Oak Slabs.

  3. 3

    Collect the slabs

Collect the 6 Dark Oak Slabs from the crafting output slot and move them to your inventory.

  4. 4

    Place the slab

Place Dark Oak Slab on the ground or a surface — right-clicking the bottom half of a block face places it as a bottom slab, right-clicking the top half places it as a top slab.

  5. 5

Stack slabs for a full block

To form a full double-slab block, place a second Dark Oak Slab in the same block space as an existing slab; the result is a solid cube mobs cannot step over without jumping.

Tip

Dark Oak Slab is waterloggable: use a water bucket on a placed slab to fill the space with water while keeping the slab in place. This technique is popular for decorative water features and hidden water channels.

Frequently asked questions

How do you craft Dark Oak Slab in Minecraft?

Place 3 Dark Oak Planks side by side in any single horizontal row of a Crafting Table (3×3 grid). The recipe yields 6 Dark Oak Slabs. The same recipe works identically in Java Edition and Bedrock Edition.

What is the fastest tool to mine Dark Oak Slab?

An axe of any material tier mines Dark Oak Slab fastest. Dark Oak Slab can also be broken by hand or with any other tool, but an axe provides the shortest break time. Dark Oak Slab always drops itself regardless of the tool used, so Silk Touch is not required.

Does Dark Oak Slab burn or catch fire?

Dark Oak Slab is flammable with a flammability value of 5 and a fire spread value of 20. An open flame or lava nearby can ignite Dark Oak Slab and spread fire to adjacent flammable blocks. In Java Edition it can also be lit directly with flint and steel.

What happens when you stack two Dark Oak Slabs in the same space?

Placing a second Dark Oak Slab in the same block space as an existing Dark Oak Slab creates a full double-slab block. The double-slab behaves as a solid cube: mobs cannot step over it without jumping, and it fills the entire block height.

Can Dark Oak Slab be used as furnace fuel?

Dark Oak Slab works as furnace fuel. One Dark Oak Slab smelts 0.75 items, the same fuel value shared by all wooden slabs. This makes Dark Oak Slab a less efficient fuel than a full Dark Oak Plank (1.5 items), but useful for consuming partial wood supplies.

What is the difference between Dark Oak Slab and other wood slabs?

Dark Oak Slab shares identical stats with all other vanilla wood slabs — blast resistance 3.0, hardness 2.0, fuel value 0.75 items per slab, waterloggable, and flammable. The only difference is the dark brown visual texture sourced from dark oak wood, which suits builds with a dark or rustic aesthetic.
