Description

The creeper head drops exclusively when a charged creeper — a creeper that has been struck by lightning — kills a creeper mob in its explosion radius. This is the only legitimate survival source; it cannot be crafted or found in loot. Lightning rod placement near creeper farms can increase charged creeper frequency during thunderstorms.

Worn in the helmet slot, the creeper head reduces the detection range of creepers by roughly half, allowing players to approach them much closer before triggering a chase. This is shared behavior with all mob heads — each head provides camouflage against the specific mob it represents.

Placed on a note block, the creeper head changes the instrument to produce the creeper's iconic hissing sound at the chosen pitch. All five mob heads (creeper, skeleton, wither skeleton, zombie, and player) have unique note block sounds. As a display item, the creeper head is widely used for decorative builds, halloween-themed maps, and as a tribute block. It can also be dispensed from a dispenser onto nearby entities as a helmet.

How to get a Creeper Head in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Wait for a thunderstorm

Charged creepers only appear during thunderstorms, so play or sleep-skip until lightning is active in the world.

  2. 2

    Charge a creeper

Make lightning strike within about 3-4 blocks of a creeper, or hit it with a Channeling-enchanted trident during the storm, to turn it into a charged creeper.

  3. 3

    Group a second creeper

Lure or spawn another regular creeper next to the charged one; the head only drops when a charged creeper kills a creeper.

  4. 4

    Trigger the explosion

Let the charged creeper detonate while a normal creeper is inside its blast radius so the dying creeper drops its head.

  5. 5

    Collect and use the head

Pick up the creeper head, then place it on a block, wear it in the helmet slot, or set it on a note block.

Important

A charged creeper that kills a player, skeleton, wither skeleton, or zombie makes those mobs drop their heads too; only these five mobs have heads obtainable this way.

Frequently asked questions

Can you craft a creeper head?

No. The creeper head cannot be crafted; it only drops when a charged creeper's explosion kills another creeper.

How do you make a charged creeper?

A creeper becomes charged when lightning strikes within about 3-4 blocks of it, or when it is hit by a Channeling-enchanted trident during a storm.

What does wearing a creeper head do?

Worn in the helmet slot, it reduces the range at which creepers detect you by roughly 50%, letting you get closer before they react.

Does the creeper head do anything on a note block?

Yes. Placed on top of a note block, it makes the block play the creeper's hissing sound instead of a normal note.

Is the creeper head in both Java and Bedrock?

Yes, both editions include the creeper head with the same charged-creeper drop mechanic and the same wearable and note-block behaviors.
