Player Head
Player Head is a decorative block showing a player's face — dropped only when a charged creeper (a creeper struck by lightning) kills that player in Java Edition.
Description
Player Head can be set on the floor or mounted on a wall, and it can be worn in the helmet slot as a purely cosmetic disguise that grants no protection. Builders use Player Head together with custom-skin head databases to create detailed decorations — furniture, statues, logos, and head-based pixel art — since any skin texture can be encoded into a head. In Bedrock Edition, players do not drop heads from charged creepers, so Player Head is available only through the /give command or the Creative inventory. In Java 1.20.5 and later, use /give @p minecraft:player_head[profile="PlayerName"] to obtain a named head directly.
Java Edition Guide
How to get a Player Head in Minecraft
-
1
Find a creeper
Locate a creeper during a thunderstorm, or lead one to an open area where lightning can reach it.
-
2
Charge the creeper
Let lightning strike the creeper, or use a trident with Channeling on it during a thunderstorm, turning it into a charged creeper.
-
3
Lure it to the player
Position the charged creeper right next to the player whose Player Head you want to obtain.
-
4
Trigger the explosion
Let the charged creeper explode and kill the player; that player drops their Player Head.
In Bedrock Edition, charged creepers do not drop player heads — Player Head is obtainable there only through the /give command or Creative mode.

Frequently asked questions
Can you craft a Player Head?
No. Player Head cannot be crafted in any edition. In Java Edition it drops only when a charged creeper kills a player.
How do you get a Player Head in survival?
In Java Edition survival, charge a creeper with lightning and let it kill the target player; that player drops their Player Head. This is the only legitimate survival method.
Does Player Head work the same in Bedrock Edition?
No. In Bedrock Edition players do not drop heads from charged creepers, so Player Head is available only through the /give command or the Creative inventory.
Can you wear a Player Head?
Yes. Player Head can be equipped in the helmet slot as a cosmetic item, but it provides no armor or damage protection.
What command gives a specific player's head?
In Java 1.20.5 and later use /give @p minecraft:player_head[profile="PlayerName"]; earlier versions use the SkullOwner NBT tag.
Is Player Head renewable?
Yes in Java Edition. Charged creepers can be created repeatedly during thunderstorms and players respawn, so Player Head can be farmed.
