Copper Grate
Semi-transparent copper lattice from Trial Chambers that lets light and entities pass through but blocks water flow, available in four oxidation stages.
Description
Like all copper blocks, grates oxidise through four stages: normal, exposed, weathered, and oxidized. Each transition brings a progressively greener appearance. Waxing with a honeycomb at any stage prevents further oxidation; scraping with an axe reverses it one stage at a time.
A copper grate produces no light of its own but is frequently paired with copper bulbs or sculk sensors in builds that lean into the trial-chamber aesthetic. Because entities can pass through, they also serve as see-through fences that do not obstruct visual lines in builds where regular walls would feel too enclosed.

How to Get and Use Copper Grate in Minecraft
-
1
Craft Copper Grate
Open a crafting table and place 4 copper ingots in a 2×2 square to yield 4 Copper Grates. Copper ingots come from smelting raw copper ore in a furnace — raw copper drops when you mine copper ore with a stone pickaxe or better.
-
2
Place and observe the transparency
Right-click to place Copper Grate on any surface. Light passes through the grate, and players, mobs, and projectiles move through it freely — it acts as a see-through visual barrier without blocking entity movement or line of sight.
-
3
Use as a mob filter in farm builds
Position Copper Grates above or beside water flush channels in mob farms. Mobs pass through the grate but water does not flow through, making Copper Grates ideal for separating mob movement zones from drainage channels without extra solid blocks.
-
4
Manage the oxidation stage
Copper Grate ages through four colour stages over time: unaffected (copper orange), exposed, weathered, and oxidized (teal-green). Right-click with a honeycomb to wax and lock the current stage. To reverse oxidation, use an axe on an unwaxed grate — each scrape steps back one stage.
Copper Grate was added in Java Edition 1.21 and Bedrock Edition 1.21.0 as part of the Trials & Tales update released in June 2024.

Frequently asked questions
How do you craft Copper Grate in Minecraft?
Place 4 copper ingots in a 2×2 square on a crafting table to get 4 Copper Grates. Copper ingots come from smelting raw copper in a furnace; raw copper drops when mining copper ore with a stone pickaxe or better.
Can mobs and players walk through a Copper Grate?
Yes. Players, mobs, and projectiles all pass through Copper Grates freely. The grate acts as a see-through visual fence without blocking entity movement, making it useful for decorative barriers and farm builds.
Does water flow through a Copper Grate?
No. Copper Grates block water flow entirely. Water sources and flowing water cannot pass through the block, which makes Copper Grates effective as mob-sorting filters placed above water flush channels in farms.
How do you stop a Copper Grate from oxidizing?
Right-click a Copper Grate with a honeycomb to wax it. A waxed Copper Grate keeps its current oxidation colour permanently and will not change further. To remove wax and allow oxidation or scraping again, use an axe on the block.
Which Minecraft version added Copper Grate?
Copper Grate was added in Java Edition 1.21 and Bedrock Edition 1.21.0, released as part of the Trials & Tales update in June 2024. Copper Grates also appear naturally inside Trial Chamber structures.
