Waxed Copper Grate
Waxed Copper Grate is a transparent decorative block that never oxidizes, yielding four per Waxed Block of Copper and perfect for patterned floors and ventilation grilles.
Description
Builders reach for Waxed Copper Grate whenever a design calls for a see-through panel that still reads as solid metal — ventilation shafts, industrial floor grating, decorative window mullions, and decorative drains that let water pass through without losing the copper aesthetic. Waxed Copper Grate is transparent (light and entities pass through), mobs cannot spawn on its surface, and the block can be waterlogged so it sits inside a flowing channel without breaking the flow. The block does not conduct redstone, does not emit light, and does not burn, which leaves Waxed Copper Grate safe to embed next to lava or inside fire-themed builds. Because copper and honeycomb are both renewable resources, Waxed Copper Grate is fully renewable, and stacking to 64 lets a single inventory slot carry a long run of grating for large factory or steampunk projects.

How to craft and use Waxed Copper Grate in Minecraft
-
1
Smelt copper and build a Block of Copper
Smelt nine raw copper into copper ingots, then arrange those nine ingots in a filled 3x3 crafting grid to produce one Block of Copper.
-
2
Seal the block with a honeycomb
Right-click the Block of Copper while holding a honeycomb to convert it into a Waxed Block of Copper, locking the block at its current oxidation stage forever.
-
3
Craft four Waxed Copper Grates
Place the Waxed Block of Copper anywhere on a crafting grid to yield four Waxed Copper Grates. A stonecutter performs the same 1:4 conversion for a single-block recipe.
-
4
Embed the grates into a build
Place Waxed Copper Grate as a transparent panel for ventilation shafts, drains, or patterned floors. The block can be waterlogged and mobs cannot spawn on it.
Waxed Copper Grate drops nothing unless broken with a stone pickaxe or better. A wooden pickaxe or bare hand destroys the block without yielding any item.

Frequently asked questions
Can you craft Waxed Copper Grate in Minecraft?
Yes. Place one Waxed Block of Copper anywhere on a crafting grid to produce four Waxed Copper Grates. A stonecutter performs the same 1:4 conversion.
Does Waxed Copper Grate oxidize over time?
No. The wax coating locks Waxed Copper Grate at its current color permanently, blocking all four normal oxidation stages that an unwaxed Copper Grate passes through.
What tool do you need to mine Waxed Copper Grate?
A stone pickaxe or better. Mining Waxed Copper Grate with a wooden pickaxe or bare hand destroys the block and drops nothing.
Can mobs spawn on Waxed Copper Grate?
No. Copper grates, waxed or unwaxed, are transparent blocks and mobs cannot spawn on their surface, which makes the block useful for spawn-safe floors.
Is Waxed Copper Grate renewable?
Yes. Copper is renewable through drowned drops and honeycomb is renewable from bee nests, so Waxed Copper Grate can be produced indefinitely.
What version added the Copper Grate family?
Copper Grate and its waxed variant were added in Minecraft 1.21 Tricky Trials, for both Java Edition and Bedrock Edition.
