Description

Steak is one of the best food items in Minecraft, restoring 8 hunger points and 12.8 saturation per bite, matched only by Cooked Porkchop. A player cooks Raw Beef in a Furnace (10 seconds), a Smoker (5 seconds, twice as fast), or on a Campfire (30 seconds); each of the three recipes turns exactly one Raw Beef into one finished Steak. The finished food stacks to 64, so a single inventory slot carries enough meals for a long caving expedition, and the supply stays fully renewable because Cows respawn and the cooking loop runs forever on Charcoal or Wood. Eating takes 32 game ticks (1.6 seconds), the standard time for any food in the game.

Beyond cooking, a Cow or Mooshroom killed by fire drops Steak directly: a sword with the Fire Aspect enchantment, a bow with the Flame enchantment, or a Lava pool turns the kill into a drop of 1 to 3 steaks, and the Looting enchantment raises that ceiling by one steak per level, up to 1-6 at Looting III. Butcher villagers historically traded 6 to 7 steaks for 1 emerald, ominous Trial Spawners in Trial Chambers can emit Steak as loot, and a Butcher Villager may gift one Steak to a player carrying the Hero of the Village effect. Tamed Wolves also eat Steak, healing them, allowing breeding, and accelerating baby growth by 10% of the remaining time, which makes Steak a dual-purpose item for survival and animal husbandry.

Guide

How to cook Steak in Minecraft

  1. 1

Hunt a cow for Raw Beef

Find cows in plains, forests, and savanna biomes and kill one to collect 1 to 3 Raw Beef, the single ingredient every Steak recipe needs.

  2. 2

    Pick a cooking station

Place a furnace, a smoker, or a campfire as the cooking station; the smoker finishes each Steak in 5 seconds, twice as fast as the furnace's 10 seconds, while the campfire takes 30 seconds but needs only wood.

  3. 3

    Load fuel and Raw Beef

Drop Raw Beef into the top slot and add coal, charcoal, wood, or a lava bucket to the fuel slot so the timer runs until one Raw Beef becomes one Steak.

  4. 4

    Skip cooking with Fire Aspect

Kill a cow with a Fire Aspect sword, a Flame bow, or lava so the cow drops 1 to 3 Steak directly, removing the furnace step entirely.

  5. 5

    Boost the drop with Looting

Enchant the weapon with Looting to raise the cooked-drop ceiling from 1-3 to 1-4 at Looting I, 1-5 at Looting II, and 1-6 at Looting III when killing cows by fire.

Tip

A smoker cooks food twice as fast as a furnace, so reserve a smoker for meat and fish while leaving the furnace for ores and other smelting.

Frequently asked questions

How much hunger does Steak restore in Minecraft?

Steak restores 8 hunger points and 12.8 saturation per bite, tied with Cooked Porkchop for the highest of any standard food in the game. Eating takes 32 game ticks (1.6 seconds).

How do you cook Steak in Minecraft?

Place Raw Beef in the top slot of a furnace, smoker, or campfire and add fuel like coal, charcoal, or wood. Each Raw Beef turns into one Steak, and the smoker finishes in 5 seconds, twice as fast as the furnace's 10 seconds.

Is Steak renewable in Minecraft?

Yes, Steak is renewable because cows are renewable and Raw Beef can be cooked forever with renewable fuel such as charcoal or wood, or dropped directly from cows killed by fire.

Does Looting affect Steak drops from cows?

Yes. When a cow dies by fire, Looting raises the cooked Steak drop from 1-3 to 1-4 at Looting I, 1-5 at Looting II, and 1-6 at Looting III, adding one steak per level.

Can you feed Steak to wolves in Minecraft?

Yes, Steak feeds tamed wolves, healing them, allowing breeding, and speeding baby wolf growth by 10% of the remaining time, the same effect as any other meat fed to wolves.

What is the difference between a smoker and a furnace for Steak?

A smoker cooks Steak in 5 seconds, exactly twice as fast as a furnace's 10 seconds, but a smoker only accepts food, so ores and other non-food items still require a furnace or blast furnace.
