Raw Beef is the uncooked meat dropped by cows and mooshrooms in Minecraft whenever the animal dies while not on fire. A single cow yields 1 to 3 Raw Beef, and the Looting enchantment raises that ceiling to 1–6 pieces at level III. Each Raw Beef restores 3 hunger points and 1.8 saturation, making Raw Beef a reliable early-game food source before the player builds a furnace. Cows spawn naturally on grass blocks in plains, forests, and savannas during daylight, so a pen of two or three breeding pairs sustains an infinite Raw Beef supply. If a cow dies while burning — from lava, fire, or a sword enchanted with Fire Aspect — the animal drops Cooked Beef instead, skipping the smelting step entirely.

Cooking Raw Beef in a furnace, smoker, or campfire turns the meat into Cooked Beef, which restores 8 hunger points and 12.8 saturation — more than four times the raw value. A smoker finishes the job twice as fast as a furnace, and a campfire can process up to four Raw Beef at once without fuel beyond the initial flame.
