Description

Chiseled tuff was added in Java Edition 1.21 as part of the expanded tuff block family that accompanied the trial chambers update. It is obtained by placing tuff bricks in a stonecutter, which also yields tuff brick slabs, stairs, and walls from the same material. The block features a carved relief pattern on all six faces — two horizontal bands with a central framed motif — giving it a classical architectural look.

Tuff itself generates naturally between Y -16 and Y 112, replacing stone patches in the underground. The full processing chain from raw tuff: tuff → polished tuff → tuff bricks → chiseled tuff. Each stage provides a progressively more refined appearance for builds that demand premium stone finishes.

Because tuff generates abundantly and is renewable through stonecutter processing, chiseled tuff is one of the more accessible decorative carved blocks compared to chiseled sandstone or chiseled stone bricks. Builders use it in temple facades, colonnades, fireplaces, and framing elements where a carved stone texture adds detail without the cost of quartz or deepslate variants.

How to Craft and Use Chiseled Tuff in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Mine Tuff underground

Tuff generates naturally between Y=-16 and Y=112, replacing stone patches in cave systems and underground layers. Use any pickaxe — a wood pickaxe or better — to harvest Tuff blocks.

  2. 2

    Process Tuff into Polished Tuff

Place Tuff in a stonecutter and select Polished Tuff. One Tuff block yields one Polished Tuff, upgrading the rough surface to a smoother finish.

  3. 3

Cut Polished Tuff into Tuff Bricks

Put Polished Tuff in the stonecutter and select Tuff Bricks. One Polished Tuff block yields one Tuff Brick at a 1:1 ratio.

  4. 4

Create Chiseled Tuff from Tuff Bricks

Place Tuff Bricks in the stonecutter and select Chiseled Tuff. The conversion is 1:1 — one Tuff Brick produces one Chiseled Tuff with the full carved relief pattern on all six faces.

  5. 5

Place Chiseled Tuff as a decorative accent

Use Chiseled Tuff to frame doorways, top pillars, or add relief panels to temple facades. The carved geometric motif creates visual depth without expensive materials like quartz or deepslate variants.

Mining requirement

Chiseled Tuff drops nothing without a pickaxe. A wood pickaxe is sufficient, but iron or diamond speeds up mining significantly.

Frequently asked questions

How do you get Chiseled Tuff?

Place Tuff Bricks in a stonecutter and select Chiseled Tuff. One Tuff Brick yields one Chiseled Tuff. Tuff Bricks are obtained by processing Polished Tuff in a stonecutter, and Polished Tuff from raw Tuff — a three-step chain in total.

When was Chiseled Tuff added to Minecraft?

Chiseled Tuff was added in Java Edition 1.21 and Bedrock Edition 1.21 as part of the Tricky Trials update, alongside the full expanded tuff block family.

What tool mines Chiseled Tuff fastest?

A pickaxe is required to collect Chiseled Tuff — without one, the block breaks but drops nothing. Any pickaxe tier from wood upward works; diamond and netherite are fastest.

Does Chiseled Tuff burn or catch fire?

Chiseled Tuff is non-flammable and has a blast resistance of 6.0, matching the full tuff block family. It does not catch fire from lava or flames, making it a safe decorative choice for fireplace surrounds.

What is the difference between Chiseled Tuff and Chiseled Stone Bricks?

Chiseled Tuff has a greenish-grey tone with a geometric floral relief on all six faces, while Chiseled Stone Bricks are paler grey with a creeper-face carving. Chiseled Tuff was added in 1.21 and is more accessible because tuff generates abundantly underground.
