Budding Amethyst cannot be obtained in Survival — it drops nothing even with a Silk Touch pickaxe — and generates only in the innermost layer of Amethyst Geodes, replacing about 8.3% of the amethyst blocks deep in the Overworld. Each exposed face of Budding Amethyst slowly grows amethyst buds through four stages: small bud, medium bud, large bud, and finally an Amethyst Cluster. Growth runs on random ticks, roughly one update per 68 seconds per block, so a single bud needs about 2 hours 16 minutes of game time to reach a full cluster.

Only the final Amethyst Cluster yields resources: breaking a cluster with a pickaxe drops 4 amethyst shards, or 2 by hand, and the Fortune enchantment raises the count — Fortune III averages about 8.8 shards per cluster. Budding Amethyst is the only renewable source of amethyst shards, which craft tinted glass, the spyglass, blocks of amethyst, and the calibrated sculk sensor. One critical limit: Budding Amethyst is destroyed when pushed by a piston, so shard farms use pistons or observers to break the clusters above each face, never to move the block itself.
