Budding Amethyst
Budding Amethyst is a rare unmineable geode block that grows amethyst buds into clusters — the only renewable source (farmable forever) of amethyst shards.
Description
Only the final Amethyst Cluster yields resources: breaking a cluster with a pickaxe drops 4 amethyst shards, or 2 by hand, and the Fortune enchantment raises the count — Fortune III averages about 8.8 shards per cluster. Budding Amethyst is the only renewable source of amethyst shards, which craft tinted glass, the spyglass, blocks of amethyst, and the calibrated sculk sensor. One critical limit: Budding Amethyst is destroyed when pushed by a piston, so shard farms use pistons or observers to break the clusters above each face, never to move the block itself.

How to farm Budding Amethyst in Minecraft
-
1
Find an Amethyst Geode
Explore caves in the Overworld until you hear the wind-chime sound of amethyst; the hollow geode's core layer holds Budding Amethyst among smooth blocks of amethyst, wrapped in calcite and smooth basalt.
-
2
Spot the budding blocks
Look for amethyst blocks with small cross-shaped buds on their faces. Only these Budding Amethyst blocks grow clusters, and they cannot be mined or moved intact.
-
3
Let the clusters mature
Keep the exposed faces open to air and let random ticks grow each bud through small, medium, and large stages into a full Amethyst Cluster — about 2 hours 16 minutes of game time per bud.
-
4
Harvest with a pickaxe
Break mature Amethyst Clusters with a pickaxe for 4 amethyst shards each, or 2 by hand. Add Fortune III to average roughly 8.8 shards per cluster.
-
5
Automate with pistons
Aim pistons or observers at the clusters, never at the Budding Amethyst itself, and trigger them to break clusters automatically into a collection hopper.
Budding Amethyst is destroyed when pushed by a piston and cannot be pulled by sticky pistons, slime, or honey blocks. Build farms so the piston only ever touches the cluster, not the block.

Frequently asked questions
Can you mine Budding Amethyst?
No. Budding Amethyst drops nothing in Survival, even with Silk Touch. It is only available in Creative mode or with commands, so the blocks already inside a geode are your only Survival supply.
Where does Budding Amethyst spawn?
Budding Amethyst generates only in the innermost layer of Amethyst Geodes, replacing about 8.3% of the amethyst blocks there. Geodes form underground throughout the Overworld.
How long do amethyst buds take to grow?
A bud advances through small, medium, and large stages into an Amethyst Cluster over roughly 2 hours 16 minutes of game time, driven by random ticks averaging one update every 68 seconds.
Does Fortune work on amethyst clusters?
Yes. A pickaxe drops 4 amethyst shards per cluster and a hand drops 2, while Fortune raises the yield — Fortune III averages about 8.8 shards per cluster.
Why does my Budding Amethyst keep disappearing?
A piston pushed it. Budding Amethyst is destroyed by pistons and cannot be moved, so design farms that break the clusters with pistons or observers without ever touching the block.
