Description

Amethyst clusters grow in four stages on the budding amethyst blocks that form the inner shell of geode structures generated underground. The stages are small bud, medium bud, large bud, and full cluster. Only the full cluster drops amethyst shards — earlier stages drop nothing or one shard depending on Fortune enchantment level. A Silk Touch pickaxe collects the cluster intact as a placeable block.

Each cluster emits a light level of 5 and produces a soft chime when a player or projectile passes through it, making them audible sound sensors in compact builds. Budding amethyst is the only block that allows new buds to grow; clusters themselves cannot be moved by pistons or placed on any block other than a solid face.

Four amethyst shards craft one amethyst block for decoration, or combine with a copper ingot and glass pane to produce a spyglass. They are also required for tinted glass, which blocks light completely while remaining visually transparent. Geodes generate between Y -58 and Y 30, usually surrounded by calcite and smooth basalt shells.

How to harvest an Amethyst Cluster in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Find an amethyst geode

Mine between Y -58 and Y 30 in any Overworld biome until you break into a hollow geode lined with calcite, smooth basalt, and purple amethyst.

  2. 2

    Wait for the full cluster

Amethyst grows through small, medium, and large buds on budding amethyst; only the full amethyst cluster yields shards, so let the buds finish growing.

  3. 3

    Mine with a pickaxe

Break the amethyst cluster with any pickaxe to drop four amethyst shards. The Fortune enchantment raises the yield up to eight.

  4. 4

Use Silk Touch to keep the block

Mine the amethyst cluster with a Silk Touch pickaxe to collect it intact as a decorative, light-emitting block instead of shards.

Tip

Never mine the budding amethyst beneath the cluster — it cannot be obtained even with Silk Touch, and destroying it permanently stops new amethyst from growing.

Frequently asked questions

Can you craft an Amethyst Cluster?

No. Amethyst clusters cannot be crafted; they grow naturally on budding amethyst inside geodes and must be mined to obtain shards.

How many amethyst shards does an Amethyst Cluster drop?

A fully grown amethyst cluster drops four amethyst shards when mined with a pickaxe, and up to eight with the Fortune III enchantment.

What is an Amethyst Cluster used for?

Amethyst shards from the cluster craft amethyst blocks, spyglasses, and tinted glass, while the cluster itself emits light and chimes when struck by projectiles.

Does an Amethyst Cluster regrow after you mine it?

Yes. As long as the budding amethyst block underneath survives, new buds regrow over time, which is the basis of automatic amethyst farms.

What light level does an Amethyst Cluster emit?

An amethyst cluster emits light level 5, a faint purple glow used for ambient lighting in cave and fantasy builds.
