White Banner is Minecraft's blank-canvas decoration block — crafted from six white wool and one stick, ideal for map markers and pattern layering in the Loom.
Java Edition 1.8+
Collect six white wool blocks and one stick. White wool drops from white sheep, which spawn naturally in most biomes. Alternatively, apply Bone Meal to any colored wool on the crafting table to turn it white. One stick is crafted from two planks of any wood type.
Open a 3×3 crafting grid. Fill the entire top row and the entire middle row with white wool (six blocks total). Place one stick in the center cell of the bottom row. This yields one White Banner per craft.
Right-click any solid surface to place the White Banner. On the ground it stands upright on a pole. On a wall it mounts flat as a Wall Banner. White Banner sways gently in the wind when placed outdoors and can be placed in water, becoming waterlogged.
Right-click a Loom to open it. Place the White Banner in the top-left slot, a dye in the top-right slot, and an optional Banner Pattern item in the center slot for special designs. Select a pattern from the preview grid and click Confirm. Repeat up to six times for layered heraldic designs.
Name the White Banner using an Anvil before placing it. Place the banner in the world, then right-click the placed banner while holding a map. The banner's location appears as a colored marker on the map with the banner's name as a label — useful for marking bases, dungeons, or village positions.
To duplicate a decorated White Banner pattern, place the decorated White Banner and a blank White Banner together in the crafting grid. The blank banner receives an exact copy of all pattern layers — faster than re-applying each Loom step manually.
Place six white wool blocks across the top two rows of a 3×3 crafting grid and one stick in the bottom center cell. This recipe yields one White Banner. White wool comes from white sheep or by applying Bone Meal to any colored wool on the crafting table.
A White Banner can hold up to six pattern layers. Each layer is applied in the Loom using one dye and an optional Banner Pattern item. Once six layers are applied, the banner is full and no more patterns can be added — the design is permanent in survival mode.
Name the White Banner using an Anvil. Place the named banner in the world, then right-click the banner while holding a map in your hand. The banner appears as a small colored icon on the map at its location, with the banner's name displayed as a label. Destroying the banner removes the marker.
White Banner has no pre-existing hue, so dyes applied in the Loom render their true color without mixing with a background tint. Starting from a white base produces the most accurate and vibrant heraldic results. Colored base banners shift the final appearance of every applied pattern.
White Banner and White Wall Banner are the same item but placed differently. When placed on the ground, White Banner stands vertically on a pole. When placed by right-clicking a wall surface, it mounts flat as a White Wall Banner. Both share the same crafting recipe.
