Description
Tuff was added in the Caves & Cliffs Update (1.18) and quietly populated small pockets within the deepslate layer of the Overworld. Originally it had no recipes — just a chalky pale-grey block with darker volcanic-ash speckles, useful only as a decoration if a player gathered enough. The 1.21 update finally promoted it to a fully-fledged building family, adding chiseled tuff, polished tuff, tuff bricks, and the matching slabs, stairs, and walls.
A stone pickaxe is the minimum required tool, and the block drops itself directly without Silk Touch. The texture sits between andesite and deepslate in tone — lighter than deepslate, darker than andesite — making it a natural transition material between the surface and deep-cave layers. Builders use the rock for monastery walls, stone keeps, and dwarven halls, often combined with deepslate bricks for tonal depth.
