Tuff
Tuff is a dark grey natural stone found below Y=0 and around iron ore veins, with a complete building family since Minecraft 1.21.
Description
Tuff became a complete decorative stone family in Minecraft 1.21. Four Tuff blocks craft four Polished Tuff, while a stonecutter converts one Tuff directly into one Polished Tuff, Tuff Slab, Tuff Stairs, or Tuff Wall. Polished Tuff leads to Tuff Bricks and the chiseled variants. Tuff’s mottled dark grey and green-grey texture bridges smooth andesite, rough deepslate, and copper details, making Tuff effective for cave entrances, fortress foundations, industrial floors, and weathered ruins.
Mining and building guide
How to find, mine, and use Tuff in Minecraft
-
1
Search below Y=0
Explore the deepslate layer below Y=0, where Tuff generates in natural blobs. Large iron ore veins between Y=-60 and Y=-8 can also be surrounded by Tuff.
-
2
Mine with any pickaxe
Break Tuff with a wooden pickaxe or any stronger pickaxe to collect the block itself. Mining Tuff without a pickaxe produces no drop.
-
3
Choose a crafting route
Place four Tuff in a square to make four Polished Tuff, or use a stonecutter for direct one-to-one access to polished blocks, slabs, stairs, and walls.
-
4
Build a layered palette
Combine raw Tuff with polished and brick variants, then add deepslate or copper to create readable depth in foundations, tunnels, ruins, and industrial structures.
The expanded Tuff building family became available in Minecraft 1.21; older versions contain the raw block but not every polished, brick, or chiseled variant.
