How to Make Tuff Slab in Minecraft
Tuff Slab
Tuff Slab is a half-height building block (slab) crafted from tuff, used in Minecraft for layered floors, ledges, and wall detailing.
Description
In builds, Tuff Slab serves wherever a half-block edge works better than a full tuff block: layered floors, window sills, stair landings, and roof trims. Two Tuff Slabs in the same block space merge into a double slab that behaves as a full block. Water fills the open half of a single Tuff Slab, so tuff detailing survives underwater and coastal builds. Two Tuff Slabs stacked vertically on the crafting grid also craft into 1 Chiseled Tuff, the carved tuff variant that generates naturally in trial chambers. Tuff Slab is non-renewable (the world holds a limited supply of tuff), so large projects slowly drain the tuff blobs below Y=0. Mobs treat a bottom Tuff Slab as a non-spawnable surface, while top halves and double slabs can host spawns — a detail mob-farm builders use when choosing slab orientation.

Guide
How to Get Tuff Slabs in Minecraft
-
1
Mine tuff below Y=0
Dig past Y=0 in any biome and look for tuff blobs embedded in the stone; break tuff with any pickaxe, because tuff mined without a pickaxe drops nothing.
-
2
Craft 6 slabs at once
Place 3 tuff blocks in a single row of the crafting grid to receive 6 Tuff Slabs per crafting operation.
-
3
Double the yield with a stonecutter
Put 1 tuff block into a stonecutter and select Tuff Slab to receive 2 slabs for every tuff block.
-
4
Place bottom or top halves
Tuff Slab occupies the bottom or top half of a block space; a second slab in the same space merges into a double slab that fills the whole block.
Mobs can spawn on top-half slabs and double slabs but never on bottom slabs, so keep Tuff Slab floors in the bottom position to remove those blocks from the list of spawnable surfaces.

Frequently asked questions
Does Tuff Slab generate naturally in Minecraft?
No. Tuff Slab never generates naturally and is obtained only by crafting or stonecutting tuff, unlike the raw tuff blobs that form below Y=0.
How many Tuff Slabs does one tuff block make?
A stonecutter turns 1 tuff into 2 Tuff Slabs. The crafting recipe spends 3 tuff at once and returns 6 slabs — the same 2-per-tuff ratio.
What tool breaks Tuff Slab?
Any pickaxe breaks Tuff Slab, and mining without a pickaxe drops nothing. A wooden pickaxe is the lowest tier that works.
Is Tuff Slab renewable?
No. Tuff Slab is non-renewable (the map holds a finite supply of tuff), and tuff generates only between Y=-64 and Y=0.
Can Tuff Slab sit in water?
Yes. A single Tuff Slab can be waterlogged: water occupies the open half of the block while the slab stays in place.
What does Tuff Slab craft into?
Two Tuff Slabs stacked vertically craft into 1 Chiseled Tuff. Chiseled Tuff is the carved tuff block that also generates naturally in trial chambers.
