Description

Tube Coral Fan is a renewable decorative coral that grows naturally on the coral reefs of warm ocean biomes in Minecraft, where each reef can host dozens of fans attached to solid blocks beneath the surface. A Tube Coral Fan breaks instantly with any tool but drops as an item only when mined with a Silk Touch enchanted tool — without Silk Touch the fan simply vanishes. Bone meal applied to sand or dirt on the warm-ocean floor has a chance to grow fresh Tube Coral Fans, which makes the block renewable and farmable. Tube Coral Fan has hardness 0 and blast resistance 0, so explosions clear the block instantly and pistons break it instead of pushing it.

Tube Coral Fan turns into its grey Dead Tube Coral Fan variant seconds after losing contact with water — within 3 to 4.95 seconds in Java Edition and immediately in Bedrock Edition — so underwater builds keep the blue colour while anything drained of water turns grey. The blue tube-shaped fingers make Tube Coral Fan the signature colour of healthy reef aquaria, usually combined with Tube Coral and Tube Coral Block for consistent decoration. Tube Coral Fan was added to Java Edition in 1.13 and to Bedrock Edition in 1.4.0 as part of the Update Aquatic.

Java Edition Guide

How to obtain and keep a Tube Coral Fan in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Locate a warm ocean

Sail until you find a warm ocean biome; coral reefs generate on its floor in Java Edition and Bedrock Edition alike.

  2. 2

    Equip a Silk Touch tool

Put Silk Touch on a pickaxe, axe, shovel, or hoe, because Tube Coral Fan drops as an item only with that enchantment and vanishes otherwise.

  3. 3

    Mine the fan underwater

Break the Tube Coral Fan attached to a reef block; the Silk Touch tool places the live blue fan in your inventory.

  4. 4

    Place it in water

Set Tube Coral Fan on a solid block that is in or next to a water source so the fan stays alive and keeps its blue colour.

  5. 5

Renew the supply with bone meal

Use bone meal on sand or dirt on the warm-ocean floor to grow new Tube Coral Fans, which keeps the block renewable.

Java vs Bedrock drying time

In Java Edition a Tube Coral Fan survives about 3 to 4.95 seconds out of water before turning into Dead Tube Coral Fan; in Bedrock Edition it dies the instant it leaves water, so keep a water bucket ready.
