Brain Coral Block
Pink, brain-textured coral block from warm ocean reefs that dies into a grey block unless it touches water; a Silk Touch pickaxe keeps it alive.
Description
A Brain Coral Block stays alive only while it touches water. Place it on dry land or remove the water beside it and within a few seconds it converts into a grey Dead Brain Coral Block; this change is permanent and cannot be reversed. To collect a living block you must mine it with a Silk Touch pickaxe — breaking it with a pickaxe without Silk Touch yields the dead grey version instead. Brain Coral Block requires a pickaxe to mine: broken by hand or with the wrong tool it drops nothing.
Brain Coral Block cannot be crafted, smelted, or used as fuel; the only renewable source besides harvesting ocean reefs is the wandering trader, who sometimes sells a random coral block for 3 emeralds. Builders prize it for aquariums, underwater bases, and reef dioramas, often placing a water source beside it so the surrounding water stays in contact and the coral never dies.

How to get a Brain Coral Block and keep it alive in Minecraft
-
1
Find a warm ocean reef
Travel to a warm ocean biome and locate a coral reef on the seafloor, where pink brain coral blocks grow among the other coral colours.
-
2
Mine with Silk Touch
Break the block with a pickaxe enchanted with Silk Touch so it drops as a living Brain Coral Block instead of the grey dead version.
-
3
Carry it in your inventory
The block does not die while it sits in your inventory, so you can transport it any distance back to your build.
-
4
Place it next to water
Set the Brain Coral Block so at least one side touches a water source; otherwise it turns grey within a few seconds.
Without Silk Touch you always get a Dead Brain Coral Block, and breaking the block without a pickaxe yields nothing at all. Once a coral block turns grey the change is permanent.

Frequently asked questions
Can you craft a Brain Coral Block?
No. Brain Coral Block has no crafting recipe; the only sources are mining it from a coral reef in a warm ocean biome and the wandering trader, who sometimes sells a random coral block for 3 emeralds.
Why does my Brain Coral Block turn grey?
A coral block dies and turns into a grey Dead Brain Coral Block when it is not touching water. Keep at least one side next to a water source.
What tool do you need to collect Brain Coral Block?
A pickaxe with the Silk Touch enchantment. A pickaxe without Silk Touch drops the grey dead block instead, and any other tool drops nothing.
Does Brain Coral Block work in Java and Bedrock?
Yes. It exists in both editions since the 1.13 Update Aquatic (Bedrock 1.4.0) and behaves the same way in each.
Is Brain Coral Block renewable?
Yes. The wandering trader sometimes sells a random coral block for 3 emeralds, so living coral blocks can be obtained endlessly.
