Description

Dead Tube Coral is the dried-out, grey variant of Tube Coral that cannot be crafted in Minecraft. The block forms whenever live Tube Coral is placed out of water and dries after a few seconds, and it also occurs naturally in coral reefs scattered across warm ocean biomes. Dead Tube Coral carries a stack size of 64, a hardness of 0, and a blast resistance of 0, so the block breaks instantly and crumbles to nothing under explosions. Dead Tube Coral can only be picked up by mining the dead block with a Silk Touch tool, because without Silk Touch the dead coral drops nothing at all. The pale, lifeless texture reads as a muted tube shape, useful for sun-bleached underwater ruins and decay-themed builds where the vivid colour of live Tube Coral would look wrong.

Guide

How to get Dead Tube Coral in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Find a warm ocean reef

Live Tube Coral generates only in coral reef structures inside warm ocean biomes, so sail across open water until you spot the bright blue tube-shaped coral fans growing on the seafloor.

  2. 2

Mine live Tube Coral with Silk Touch

Mine the live Tube Coral block with a pickaxe or other tool enchanted with Silk Touch, because without Silk Touch the live coral drops nothing and you cannot obtain the block at all.

  3. 3

Dry the coral out of water

Place the live Tube Coral on dry land away from water and wait a few seconds, after which the live block dries and transforms into Dead Tube Coral with its pale grey appearance.

  4. 4

    Collect with Silk Touch again

Mine the newly dried Dead Tube Coral with the Silk Touch tool to pick it up as an item, since the dead block also drops nothing when broken without Silk Touch.

  5. 5

    Store and build

Dead Tube Coral stacks to 64, and the pale grey blocks suit sun-bleached underwater ruins, decayed monuments, and any build that calls for muted, lifeless coral textures.

Tip

On both Java Edition and Bedrock Edition, Dead Tube Coral has a hardness of 0 and breaks instantly with any tool, but it still requires Silk Touch to drop as an item.

Frequently asked questions

Can you craft Dead Tube Coral in Minecraft?

Dead Tube Coral has no crafting recipe and cannot be made at a crafting table. The block is obtained by mining a dead coral with a Silk Touch tool, or by letting live Tube Coral dry out of water until it becomes the dead variant.

Does Dead Tube Coral drop without Silk Touch?

Dead Tube Coral drops nothing when mined without Silk Touch, whether you break the dead block directly or break live Tube Coral without the enchantment. A Silk Touch pickaxe or other Silk Touch tool is required to collect the block as an item.

How does live Tube Coral turn into Dead Tube Coral?

Live Tube Coral turns into Dead Tube Coral when the live block is placed out of water and loses access to a water source, drying after a few seconds. The dead variant then stays in its grey, lifeless form permanently until broken.

What is the stack size and hardness of Dead Tube Coral?

Dead Tube Coral has a stack size of 64, a hardness of 0, and a blast resistance of 0, so the block breaks instantly with any tool and crumbles to nothing under creeper explosions or TNT.

Where does Dead Tube Coral generate naturally?

Dead Tube Coral generates as part of coral reef structures in warm ocean biomes, where patches of coral can die off and leave the grey dead variant among the living coral fans on the seafloor.

Is Dead Tube Coral renewable?

Dead Tube Coral is renewable, because live Tube Coral can be farmed with bone meal on coral reefs and then dried out of water to produce the dead variant in unlimited quantities.
