Description

Spruce Sapling is the renewable starter for every spruce forest in Minecraft, dropped by spruce leaves at a 5% rate and pushed up to 10% by the Fortune III enchantment. Each Spruce Sapling can be planted on dirt, podzol, or grass to regrow a spruce or pine tree, which makes Spruce Sapling an endlessly farmable wood source for taiga builds. Spruce Sapling needs light level 9 above the block to grow naturally, while a single piece of bone meal forces the tree instantly in any light. A Spruce Sapling cannot be ignited and never catches fire from lava, which keeps planted rows safe near Nether portals or fireplaces.

Planting four Spruce Saplings in a 2x2 square produces a giant spruce up to 30 blocks tall, yielding roughly four times the wood of a single tree and converting the surrounding grass podzol into a darker variant. Spruce Sapling also works as furnace fuel at a rate of 0.5 items smelted per sapling, so surplus stock from a leaf farm doubles as emergency smelting material. Builders pair Spruce Sapling with podzol paths and cobblestone foundations for classic taiga cabins, and the giant-tree form lets players harvest a full stack of spruce logs from a single 2x2 harvest. Saplings stack to 64, so an entire tree farm fits in one inventory slot.

Java Edition Guide

How to grow a Spruce Sapling into a tree in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Collect Spruce Saplings from leaves

Break spruce leaves in taiga, snowy taiga, or old growth taiga biomes to drop Spruce Saplings at 5%, or up to 10% with Fortune III on the tool.

  2. 2

Plant on dirt, podzol, or grass

Right-click to place a Spruce Sapling on a dirt, podzol, mycelium, or grass block in any overworld biome with space above it.

  3. 3

Reach light level 9 or use bone meal

Spruce Sapling grows naturally only when the block above has light level 9 or higher, or apply bone meal to skip the light requirement.

  4. 4

Form a 2x2 square for a giant tree

Place four Spruce Saplings in a 2x2 square with at least 14 free blocks above to grow a giant spruce that yields about four times the wood.

Giant tree spacing

The 2x2 giant spruce needs a clear column of at least 14 blocks above and an unobstructed 5x5 to 6x6 area around it depending on the Minecraft edition.
