Birch Sapling
Birch Sapling drops from birch leaves at a 5% base rate and grows into the straight-trunked birch tree, the most reliable wood farm in Minecraft.
Description
Plant a Birch Sapling on grass, dirt, podzol, or farmland with a light level of at least 9 above, and leave six free blocks in a 3×3 column to grow a straight 5-to-7 block birch trunk. Bone meal accelerates growth and also bypasses the light requirement. A single Birch Sapling smelts 0.5 items in a furnace, and placing one in a composter has a 30% chance to raise the compost level by one. The perfectly straight birch trunk makes Birch Sapling the most predictable tree for automated wood farms and tidy timber builds.

How to get and grow Birch Saplings in Minecraft
-
1
Harvest birch leaves
Break birch leaf blocks in forest, birch forest, old growth birch forest, or dark forest biomes for a 5% base sapling drop, raised by the Fortune enchantment.
-
2
Plant on a valid surface
Place Birch Sapling on grass, dirt, podzol, rooted dirt, mud, or farmland so the sapling can take root and grow.
-
3
Provide light and space
Keep a light level of 9 or higher on the block above the sapling and leave at least six free blocks in a 3×3 column above.
-
4
Speed growth with bone meal
Right-click Birch Sapling with bone meal to advance its growth stage instantly and bypass the normal light-level requirement.
-
5
Replant the dropped saplings
Chop the straight 5-to-7 block birch trunk, then replant the new Birch Sapling drops that fall from the leaves to keep the wood farm running.
Birch trees grown from Birch Sapling always produce a straight 5-to-7 block trunk with no branches, making Birch Sapling the most predictable block for compact automated wood farms.

Frequently asked questions
How do you get a Birch Sapling in Minecraft?
Birch Sapling drops from breaking or decaying birch leaves at a 5% base rate, raised to 10% by the Fortune III enchantment. Silk Touch and shears give the leaf block, not the sapling.
Can you craft a Birch Sapling?
No. Birch Sapling has no crafting recipe and can only be obtained from birch leaf drops or by harvesting leaves on a grown birch tree.
What conditions does a Birch Sapling need to grow?
Birch Sapling needs light level 9 or higher on the block above and at least six free spaces in a 3×3 column above. Bone meal bypasses the light-level requirement and grows the tree instantly.
Is the Birch Sapling renewable?
Yes. Birch Sapling is fully renewable because every grown birch tree produces leaves that drop more saplings, letting players harvest wood endlessly.
Can you use a Birch Sapling as fuel?
Yes. One Birch Sapling smelts 0.5 items in a furnace, so two saplings equal one full smelt operation.
Do Birch Saplings work in a composter?
Yes. Placing a Birch Sapling in a composter has a 30% chance to raise the compost level by one stage.
