Oak Slab is a half-block step from oak planks — six per recipe, the most common decorative half-floor in vanilla.
Description
For builders, this is the most-used architectural detail in vanilla. Half-block roof angles, thinner floors that look like fitted boards instead of stacked logs, picnic-bench seats, decorative trim around doorways and windows — almost every project uses slabs somewhere. Walking up a slab counts as a half-block riser, the same as stairs, so smooth movement is preserved without jumping. The block burns in fire and lava and accepts torches, signs, and most surface-mounted items on its flat upper face. Slab variants exist for every wood family and every stone and brick variant in the game.

Craft Oak Slabs from planks
Place 3 oak planks in a single horizontal row in the crafting table to receive 6 Oak Slabs. Alternatively, use a stonecutter with 1 oak plank to get 2 Oak Slabs, or 1 oak log to get 2 slabs — useful when you need exact quantities without waste.

Place on bottom or top half
Right-click the lower part of a block face to place the Oak Slab in the bottom-half position. Right-click the upper part of a block face (or the underside of an overhead block) to place it in the top-half position. This distinction is essential for flush ceilings and stepped roofs.

Stack two slabs into a full block
Place a second Oak Slab directly on top of a bottom-half Oak Slab — or below a top-half Oak Slab — and they merge automatically into a double slab. The double slab is a distinct block (minecraft:oak_slab with type=double) and looks identical to a full oak plank block.

Build half-block roof angles
Alternate Oak Slabs (bottom-half) with full oak plank blocks at the same height to create a stepped roof gradient. Each slab row raises the visual line by half a block, producing smoother pitched roofs than stairs alone can achieve.

Use as floor trim and furniture
Oak Slabs placed in top-half position sit flush against a ceiling, creating recessed-panel looks. Placed on the ground they form low benches, window sills, or step transitions between rooms. Surface items like torches and signs attach to the flat top face of any bottom-half Oak Slab.
Oak Slab does not require a specific tool — bare hands work. However, an axe is the fastest tool for breaking Oak Slabs, recovering them as full-count drops.
