Description

Chiseled Bookshelf was added in the 1.20 update and crafted from six wood planks (any species) arranged in two horizontal rows with three wood slabs in the middle row, yielding one shelf per recipe. Unlike the regular bookshelf, this variant is interactive: right-clicking a slot stores or retrieves a book or enchanted book, with up to six books per shelf displayed visibly on the front face — making it a functional inventory rather than just decoration.

A comparator placed against the block reads the count and emits a redstone signal corresponding to which slot was last interacted with — useful for hidden-room triggers where a specific book retrieval opens a door or dispenses a reward. Note that this variant does NOT boost enchanting table levels: the regular bookshelf is still required for that purpose. The visual separation between the two roles allows libraries to display real readable books in chiseled shelves while using regular bookshelves nearby for the enchanting buff.

How to use a Chiseled Bookshelf in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Craft the Chiseled Bookshelf

Place six wood planks of any species across the top and bottom rows of a crafting table and three matching wood slabs in the middle row to make one Chiseled Bookshelf.

  2. 2

    Place and orient it

Set the Chiseled Bookshelf against a wall; it faces toward you when placed, showing six empty slots arranged in two rows of three on the front face.

  3. 3

    Store books in a slot

Right-click a specific slot with a book, enchanted book, book and quill, or written book to insert it — the filled slot shows that book's spine on the front.

  4. 4

    Retrieve a book

Right-click a filled slot with an empty hand to take that book back; each of the six slots stores and releases one book independently.

  5. 5

    Wire it to redstone

Place a comparator against the Chiseled Bookshelf to read the last slot interacted with as signal strength 1 to 6, driving hidden-door or library-puzzle contraptions.

Does not boost enchanting

Unlike the regular Bookshelf, the Chiseled Bookshelf does not raise Enchanting Table power. Keep standard bookshelves around the table for the enchanting buff and use chiseled shelves for storage and decoration.

Frequently asked questions

Can you craft a Chiseled Bookshelf?

Yes. Six wood planks (any species) in the top and bottom rows plus three matching wood slabs in the middle row of a crafting table make one Chiseled Bookshelf. It was added in Minecraft 1.20.

Does a Chiseled Bookshelf boost the Enchanting Table?

No. Only the regular Bookshelf raises Enchanting Table levels. The Chiseled Bookshelf is functional storage and decoration that does not affect enchanting power.

How many books does a Chiseled Bookshelf hold?

A Chiseled Bookshelf holds up to six items across six slots, accepting books, enchanted books, books and quills, and written books, each shown individually on the front face.

How does a Chiseled Bookshelf work with redstone?

A comparator placed against a Chiseled Bookshelf outputs a signal matching the last slot interacted with, letting builders trigger hidden doors or reward dispensers from specific book slots.

What tool breaks a Chiseled Bookshelf fastest?

An axe breaks a Chiseled Bookshelf fastest. The block drops itself along with any books still stored inside when it is mined.
