Bookshelf
Bookshelf is the enchantment-table booster — fifteen of them around a table unlock the maximum level-30 enchantments.
Description
The block has one major mechanical role: it boosts the maximum enchantment level available at an enchanting table when placed within a one-block radius around the table, with one block of air between table and shelves. A single shelf raises the maximum from level eight to higher tiers; fifteen shelves arranged in a hollow ring around the table unlock level thirty enchantments — the highest the game offers and required for the strongest gear like Mending and Sharpness V from a single roll. Mining without silk touch drops three books rather than the shelf itself, so harvesting it intact requires the appropriate enchantment. The block is also flammable like all wood-derived materials.

How to craft and use a Bookshelf in Minecraft
-
1
Craft Books first
Each book requires 3 paper and 1 leather in the crafting grid. Paper is made from 3 sugar cane in a row. You need 3 books to craft one bookshelf.
-
2
Craft the Bookshelf
Place 3 books in the middle row and 6 wood planks (any type, freely mixed) in the top and bottom rows of the crafting grid. This yields 1 bookshelf. All plank species work and can be combined in the same recipe.
-
3
Boost enchantment levels
Place the bookshelf within 2 blocks of an enchanting table (measured horizontally or diagonally). There must be exactly 1 air block between the bookshelf and the table — no other block can occupy that space. Each valid bookshelf increases the maximum enchantment level shown in the table. You need 15 bookshelves arranged around the table to unlock level-30 enchantments.
-
4
Arrange the bookshelves correctly
Build a hollow square or U-shape around the enchanting table, leaving a 1-block gap between the shelves and the table. The shelves must be at table height or 1 block above. Bookshelves placed further than 2 blocks away have no effect.
-
5
Mine and recycle
Breaking a bookshelf without Silk Touch drops 3 books — not the bookshelf itself. Use a Silk Touch tool to recover the intact bookshelf block for relocation.
Bookshelves cannot store books. For actual book storage, use the Chiseled Bookshelf, added in Java Edition 1.20, which holds up to 6 books or book-and-quills.

Frequently asked questions
How many bookshelves do I need for level-30 enchantments?
You need exactly 15 bookshelves placed within 2 blocks of the enchanting table, with a 1-block air gap between each shelf and the table. Fewer shelves lower the maximum available enchantment level.
What happens when I break a bookshelf without Silk Touch?
Breaking a bookshelf without a Silk Touch tool drops 3 books, not the bookshelf itself. To recover the bookshelf block intact, use a tool enchanted with Silk Touch.
Can bookshelves be made from different wood types?
Yes. The bookshelf recipe accepts any combination of wood planks — oak, spruce, birch, jungle, acacia, dark oak, mangrove, cherry, and more can all be mixed freely in the same craft.
Can a bookshelf store books?
No. The regular bookshelf is purely decorative and functional as an enchanting table booster. To store books, use the Chiseled Bookshelf (added in Java Edition 1.20), which can hold up to 6 books or book-and-quills.
Does the bookshelf need to be directly next to the enchanting table?
No, but it must be within 2 blocks horizontally or diagonally. Crucially, there must be exactly 1 air block between the bookshelf face and the enchanting table — placing another block in that gap nullifies the bookshelf's contribution.
Are bookshelves flammable?
Yes. Bookshelves are made of wood and books, so they burn and can be ignited by fire, lava, or flint-and-steel. Avoid placing them near fire sources in your builds.
