Description

Nether Wart is a fungus that players plant on soul sand to fuel almost every potion in Minecraft. It generates naturally in Nether fortresses, growing in soul-sand gardens beside the stairwells, and also appears in bastion remnants and from piglin bartering. Harvest a fully grown Nether Wart to collect 2-4 warts; an immature plant drops only a single one. Plant a wart back on soul sand to farm it — it grows through four stages and, unlike normal crops, ignores light level and cannot be sped up with bone meal. Its main role is brewing: drop one Nether Wart into a water bottle to make an Awkward Potion, the base for Strength, Swiftness, Healing, and most other potions. Beyond brewing, nine warts craft into a Nether Wart Block for decoration, and two warts with two nether bricks craft Red Nether Bricks. Added in 2011, Nether Wart works the same in Java and Bedrock Edition.

How to grow and use Nether Wart in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Gather soul sand

Collect soul sand from the Nether — it is the only block Nether Wart can grow on.

  2. 2

    Plant the wart

Right-click a Nether Wart onto the soul sand; the light level does not matter.

  3. 3

    Wait for it to mature

The plant passes through four growth stages; bone meal will not speed it up, so just wait.

  4. 4

    Harvest fully grown warts

Break a stage-3 plant to collect 2-4 warts, then replant one to keep the farm running.

  5. 5

    Brew a potion

Add a Nether Wart to a water bottle in a brewing stand to make an Awkward Potion.

Important

Nether Wart only grows on soul sand and ignores light, but bone meal has no effect — natural growth is the only way to mature it.
