How to grow and use Nether Wart in Minecraft
-
1
Gather soul sand
Collect soul sand from the Nether — it is the only block Nether Wart can grow on.
-
2
Plant the wart
Right-click a Nether Wart onto the soul sand; the light level does not matter.
-
3
Wait for it to mature
The plant passes through four growth stages; bone meal will not speed it up, so just wait.
-
4
Harvest fully grown warts
Break a stage-3 plant to collect 2-4 warts, then replant one to keep the farm running.
-
5
Brew a potion
Add a Nether Wart to a water bottle in a brewing stand to make an Awkward Potion.
Nether Wart only grows on soul sand and ignores light, but bone meal has no effect — natural growth is the only way to mature it.

Frequently asked questions
Where do you find Nether Wart?
It generates in Nether fortresses on soul sand near stairwells, and also appears in bastion remnants and from piglin bartering.
What block does Nether Wart grow on?
Only soul sand. It will not grow on dirt, farmland, or any other block.
Can you speed up Nether Wart with bone meal?
No. Bone meal has no effect; the plant grows through four stages on its own, regardless of light.
What is Nether Wart used for?
Mainly brewing — one wart turns a water bottle into an Awkward Potion, the base for most potions. It also crafts Nether Wart Blocks and Red Nether Bricks.
How much Nether Wart do you get per harvest?
A fully grown plant drops 2-4 warts, while an immature one drops just a single wart.
