Melon Seeds are planted on farmland to grow a stem that spreads melon blocks onto adjacent soil.

How to farm Melon Seeds in Minecraft
-
1
Get the seeds
Craft Melon Seeds by placing one melon slice in any crafting grid slot, or loot them from dungeon, mineshaft, temple, and village chests.
-
2
Plant on hydrated farmland
Till dirt with a hoe near water and right-click the farmland with the seeds. Water within four blocks keeps the soil hydrated for faster growth.
-
3
Leave an empty adjacent block
Keep at least one free dirt, grass, or farmland block next to the stem. A mature stem can only spawn a melon block where there is open space.
-
4
Harvest the melon, not the stem
Break the grown melon block and the stem stays in place, regrowing a new melon over time. Use a Fortune tool to get more melon slices per block.
Bone meal speeds up stem growth but never forces a melon to appear — the melon only spreads onto a free neighbouring block once the stem is fully grown.

Frequently asked questions
Can you craft Melon Seeds?
Yes. Place one melon slice anywhere in the crafting grid to get a single batch of Melon Seeds.
Where do you find Melon Seeds?
Melon Seeds spawn in dungeon, mineshaft, temple, and village chests, and you can craft them from a melon slice you grow or buy.
Do melon stems need replanting after harvest?
No. The stem stays in place after you break the melon block and keeps spreading new melon blocks onto a free adjacent block over time.
Can Melon Seeds breed chickens?
Yes. Like wheat, beetroot, and pumpkin seeds, Melon Seeds can be fed to chickens to breed them and to lure them around.
Does bone meal grow melons instantly?
No. Bone meal only speeds up stem growth; a melon block still appears on its own once the stem is mature and a neighbouring block is free.
