Description

Lingering Potion is brewed by adding dragon's breath to any splash potion at a brewing stand. Dragon's breath is collected by using a glass bottle on the purple cloud that the Ender Dragon exhales during its breath attack. The resulting lingering variant still throws like a splash potion, but instead of a one-time effect burst it summons an Area Effect Cloud that persists on the ground for up to 30 seconds, shrinking in radius over time.

Any entity that walks into the cloud receives the potion's effect. This makes lingering potions effective for area denial, mob funnel traps, healing zones, or PvP terrain control. Their most important secondary use is crafting tipped arrows: eight arrows combined with one lingering potion in a crafting grid coats all eight arrows with the chosen effect, converting any bow or crossbow into an effect delivery tool. This makes dragon's breath a valuable farming target for players who build combat systems or supply enchanted arrow collections.

How to make and use a Lingering Potion in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Collect dragon's breath

Use an empty glass bottle on the purple breath cloud the Ender Dragon exhales during its attack to fill the bottle with dragon's breath.

  2. 2

    Brew the lingering potion

Place a finished splash potion in a brewing stand, add dragon's breath to the top ingredient slot, and wait for the brew to complete.

  3. 3

Throw it to create a cloud

Throw the lingering potion at the ground or a target; it bursts into an Area Effect Cloud that applies its effect to every entity inside for up to 30 seconds.

  4. 4

    Craft tipped arrows

Surround one lingering potion with 8 arrows in the crafting grid to make 8 tipped arrows that carry the same effect.

Cloud vs splash

A lingering potion's cloud has a shorter effect duration per hit than a splash potion's instant burst, but it covers an area over time — ideal for zone control rather than a single hit.
